Both you and the person you're trying to name drop with must be up to date with iOS.

As for having 'fixed' your phone with a 'laser machine', yes, you could have borked that capability.

Both iPhones should turn on their NFC

Go to the settings of your phone and turn on the NFC option in the general section

Yes, it works on an iPhone 12. Name drop works on every iPhone running iOS 17.

If it does not work on yours, it's most likely because you tampered with the phone and damaged something in the process.

Apple won't touch your phone now, so if that feature is important to you, you will have to buy a new phone.
