No iMessage notification sound after IOS 17.0.1 update on iPhone 13 Max

After updating to IOS 17.0.1, I have noticed that I no longer get sound notifications for text/imessage unless I have the phone unlocked and Messages app opened. While it is opened, messages will audibly alert me. This is while using standard apple sounds. Nothing custom. The only way to get it the sound notifications to work when not in messages is to enable alerts for lock screen, notification center or Banners. None of which I have ever had to enable to get sound to work, nor want alerts when my screen is locked.

Has anyone experienced this and if so is there a way to fix the sounds without enabling any of the visible banner alerts?

Sounds like a bug in the new 17.0.1 as I have duplicated it on both the 12 and the 13.

Talked to a Senior Adviser, he had me go into sounds/haptics and run the volume bar up and down three times, turn off notifications in messages, shutdown, restart, turn on notifications in messages. Hard to figure but this fixed the problem of no sounds for text messages. Phone call sound was working but not texts. Fixed for me, hope this may help others.

🎉 I figured it out for me. I tried all kinds of restarts and resets and toggling everything. It wasn't until I turned off Bluetooth that it worked. Will walk through it:

  • I noticed that when the screen was locked, I would not get any haptics or sounds for text messages. Even though it was not in Silent Mode.
  • It was working just a couple days prior, and I did not have an update or change in settings.

What I did to test:

  • I turned off Bluetooth on my phone, locked my phone, and sent a text to it.
  • the haptics vibrated, and the sound was made. (✅ As intended.)
  • I turned on Bluetooth on my phone, locked my phone, and sent a text to it.
  • the haptics did NOT vibrate, and NO sound was made. (🚩 NOT intended.)
  • I disconnected all Bluetooth devices on my phone (Settings > Bluetooth > My Devices > Forget Device)
  • I turned on Bluetooth on my phone, locked my phone, and sent a text to it.
  • the haptics did NOT vibrate, and NO sound was made. (🚩 NOT intended.)

The fix:

  • I opened my MacBook and turned off Bluetooth, I turned on Bluetooth on my phone, locked my phone, and sent a text to it.
  • the haptics vibrated, and the sound was made. (✅ As intended.)

It was my MacBook's Bluetooth getting in the way! (Check your iPad too! Turn off its Bluetooth to see if that is getting in the way. Apple Watches too...)

Even though I did not see my MacBook listed on my phone's Bluetooth settings, it was somehow getting in the way of my phone making sound and vibrating for texts.

Aside from leaving my MacBook's Bluetooth off, I do not know how to fix this so it works when they are linked. 🤷🏼

I don't know whether this is a fix, but it seems to have fixed it for me.

I deleted all the modes e.g. work, sleep, focus etc, except do not disturb, which you can't delete, but you can turn off. You just do this by going to each one and deleting it at the bottom of the menu.

This is because I noticed in each mode that there was an 'options' tab in the notification settings, and this seemed to only have the option of silencing notifications 'always' or 'when locked'. There was no option to silence notifications 'never'.

Once these modes were all deleted, and focus was turned off, then 'pings' returned to my messaging.

Hope this might help some people.

It's a pretty amateur hour bug from Apple and, frankly, if it continued I would have to get another phone because I just can't miss messages.

I was having issues receiving text alerts on my iPhone 14 Pro Max...albeit with iOS 16.7.1 after upgrading from 16.6 while facing the same issue.

I finally discovered the issue had to do with how my Focus settings were shared across devices, specifically on my Macbook Pro. I de-selected the "Share across devices" checkbox under Notifications & Focus Settings, at the bottom of the Focus menu.

Problem was solved (for me)--I am now able to receive text alerts on my iPhone. Hope this helps someone else.

I just found a FIX on my own! I know there are a wide variety of fixes listed on this thread, but here is what worked for me.

I looked at my recent messages and clicked on the contact name, scrolled down to the part where it says Hide Alerts, and somehow this got toggled ON for all my contacts. So, I'm changing it for as many contacts as I can right now, and that is working! I am getting sound with texts again! I will contact support to see if there is an easier way to change the rest of my contacts besides manually scrolling and changing each one. I have no idea how this happened. Neither person I contacted for Tech Support had me check this. I oddly checked this on my own after getting a group text and looking at the settings on that group.

Just got my text sound/alert to work on iPhone XR. May have to do with existing text chats in your messages..? I went to my kids text messages…turned on, “Hide alerts” then turned it off. Instant sounds.

Now…all my purchased tones no longer can be applied to my text alerts. I see them in my ringtones still…but can only be chosen as ringtones. This still needs to be corrected.

Hope that helps…someone.

I did think my, “Contra” reference was pretty funny.

My issue seems to be caused by also using an Apple Watch. If I turn off my watch, notifications and sounds happen on my iPhone perfectly. If I'm wearing my watch, only the watch receives the instant notifications. I found an Apple support site that confirms that is by design, but I don't remember it working that way before iOS 17.

Notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support (MY)

I think it’s 100% an issue connected to the Apple Watch. If I take my Bluetooth is off or the Watch is not connected to the phone

I get sound alerts when the phone is locked.

The alert sound issue is not just for messages, but for other apps. For instance, my Ring app doesn’t chime when people pass by when the phone is locked. So it’s much more general than just for messages. It’s any sound alert for any app and I think it’s related to the iOS 17.1, Apple Watch 10.1 operating system update.

they need to fix this

I have had this issue (no sound when a text message comes in) for more than 2 years!!!! I called Apple several times. No one could figure it out. I am rather embarrassed to say that I finally gave up. Just lived with it.

In October 2023, I got a new phone, thinking that would fix the problem. It did not!!!! I decided to check out this community and saw your post.

Long story short. I finally turned off notifications on my Apple Watch. Suddenly I am getting alerts for every text message on my new IPhone 15 PRO.

Apple needs to fix this software glitch, obviously. NOW, please. As another writer posted, having to turn off notifications on one’s Apple Watch in order to receive alerts on one’s iPhone sort of eradicates the purpose of having an Apple Watch, at least in part.
