No iMessage notification sound after IOS 17.0.1 update on iPhone 13 Max

After updating to IOS 17.0.1, I have noticed that I no longer get sound notifications for text/imessage unless I have the phone unlocked and Messages app opened. While it is opened, messages will audibly alert me. This is while using standard apple sounds. Nothing custom. The only way to get it the sound notifications to work when not in messages is to enable alerts for lock screen, notification center or Banners. None of which I have ever had to enable to get sound to work, nor want alerts when my screen is locked.

Has anyone experienced this and if so is there a way to fix the sounds without enabling any of the visible banner alerts?

Sounds like a bug in the new 17.0.1 as I have duplicated it on both the 12 and the 13.

Talked to a Senior Adviser, he had me go into sounds/haptics and run the volume bar up and down three times, turn off notifications in messages, shutdown, restart, turn on notifications in messages. Hard to figure but this fixed the problem of no sounds for text messages. Phone call sound was working but not texts. Fixed for me, hope this may help others.

I updated yesterday with the new 17 iOS fixes and everything seems to be back to normal. I am able to choose whatever I’d like to use as my text tone from purchased and created again. Also able to hear texts loudly without having to have any banner notifications on as well. I am in New York, Long Island. Hope this newest update of 17 will help you ALL.

Update (for me) - as designed, Apple diverts all sound/haptic notifications to the Apple Watch. The only way to have sound to both is to disable Wrist Detection through watch passcode settings. However, will need to manually lock and unlock the watch.

My issue is not having sounds on my phone messages when my watch is silenced. Even when mirroring etc is off, it still primarily feeds sound notifications through watch. Thus preventing the sound to phone messaging.

I'm having the same issues as well. And seems to be an issue when I have the Watch on. Disabling notification on watch fixes it.

iPhone 15 Pro (17.2.1) & Apple Watch Series 5 (10.2)

iPhone does not ring or give audible notification alert when phone is locked. Unlocked it works as expected. I don't want to turn off Wrist Detection on watch since it provides a lot.

Hoping apple finds a fix for this.

After an hour of trial and error, we have determined that not only is the watch a key factor, but the Bluetooth. If the watch is on and connected, but Bluetooth is turned off, the phone will notify while asleep any incoming texts by “waking up” and making the notification sound. When the Bluetooth is on, the phone will not awake and the user misses their messages unless these notice their watch. I have tried all work around and believe this is by design, albeit, poorly.

I replied earlier, thinking I had found a solution, but the problem actually persisted. After more digging, I found my solution to the text alert problem. On my iPhone in the Sounds & Haptics settings menu, "Play Haptics in Silent Mode" needs to be enabled (it was not), and "Change with Buttons" needs to be disabled (it was enabled). See attached. iOS 16.7.1, iPhone 14 Pro Max. While in Silent mode, the phone still vibrates now (it was not before these changes). When in Ring mode, with volume increased, the text alerts now make sounds (and vibrations). Hope this helps. I still have issues where if a conversation has been initiated or responded to on the computer (Macbook Pro, 16", 2021), it seems texts alerts are silent and ignored on the phone. Once I responded to texts back on the iPhone (same threads) the first new alert audibly occurs on the iPhone (and then on the computer). I have text alerts set to repeat 10 times, but it seems that once the message appears on the computer, the repeat alerts no longer happen on the iPhone. If the computer is shut down or disconnected from internet connectivity, this is not an issue and alerts will persist on the iPhone. Curious.

The issue is… Apple in their wisdom will only allow notifications to one device. So if you have a watch or other Bluetooth connected device, it’s that, that will receive the audible notification not both. So disconnecting Bluetooth from your device will resolve the phone not dinging issue BUT if you’re like me and hard of hearing, that’s a big problem. I need both to alert me.

Same issue. Both 15/12 PMx just updated to the latest 17.1 without resolution. When testing between the two, I was able to determine and isolate the issue (at least for me).

For everyone who has an Apple Watch paired to the phone with the issue, turn the watch off (side button power - power slide off). Once it's off, text message sound notifications come through. I was able to replicate the process.

This is not a fix by any means, just diagnostics.

Now I am trying to play with the sound settings for the watch (e.g. mirroring, etc.) to see if I can find some magical combo.

Definitely an Apple bug - isolated to Apple Watch and iPhone pairing in my case. If I find a solution, I'll follow up.
