No iMessage notification sound after IOS 17.0.1 update on iPhone 13 Max

After updating to IOS 17.0.1, I have noticed that I no longer get sound notifications for text/imessage unless I have the phone unlocked and Messages app opened. While it is opened, messages will audibly alert me. This is while using standard apple sounds. Nothing custom. The only way to get it the sound notifications to work when not in messages is to enable alerts for lock screen, notification center or Banners. None of which I have ever had to enable to get sound to work, nor want alerts when my screen is locked.

Has anyone experienced this and if so is there a way to fix the sounds without enabling any of the visible banner alerts?

Sounds like a bug in the new 17.0.1 as I have duplicated it on both the 12 and the 13.

Talked to a Senior Adviser, he had me go into sounds/haptics and run the volume bar up and down three times, turn off notifications in messages, shutdown, restart, turn on notifications in messages. Hard to figure but this fixed the problem of no sounds for text messages. Phone call sound was working but not texts. Fixed for me, hope this may help others.

Not sure if this helps anyone but if you go in to the Notifications Tab and for example under the Messaging section when you click on it you should see an option where it says Sound or Notifications not sure which one but it will say On next to it.. Click on it and on the next screen you should see 2 options.. The one thats checked says something about Direct messages or custom notifications.. Click on the bottom option that says All notifications or something like that and you should get the sound and notifications back on said application.. in this case it would be for the messages..

My call with Tech Support today has lasted over an hour already. No solutions so far. They put me through to a supervisor. So much time wasted.... The second person is still working on this looking stuff up.

How is this possible that a phone can't perform a basic function??

The only solution I know of is taking a hard line on no more apple products.

The issue is… Apple in their wisdom will only allow notifications to one device. So if you have a watch or other Bluetooth connected device, it’s that, that will receive the audible notification not both. So disconnecting Bluetooth from your device will resolve the phone not dinging issue BUT if you’re like me and hard of hearing, that’s a big problem. I need both to alert me.

I don't know whether this is a fix, but it seems to have fixed it for me.

I deleted all the modes e.g. work, sleep, focus etc, except do not disturb, which you can't delete, but you can turn off. You just do this by going to each one and deleting it at the bottom of the menu.

This is because I noticed in each mode that there was an 'options' tab in the notification settings, and this seemed to only have the option of silencing notifications 'always' or 'when locked'. There was no option to silence notifications 'never'.

Once these modes were all deleted, and focus was turned off, then 'pings' returned to my messaging.

Hope this might help some people.

It's a pretty amateur hour bug from Apple and, frankly, if it continued I would have to get another phone because I just can't miss messages.
