iOS 17 Messages -> Info: no longer displays Satellite map view

After upgrading to iOS 17, the Messages App no longer displays the Satellite map for my contacts. I do see that Messages will display a Standard map only. If I click on the estimated travel time at the bottom of the screen, Messages redirects to Maps and then shows a route to that contact. However, that's not what I'm always interested in doing. Sometimes, I need to see the location of my contact without a routing map. The satellite view was golden. How do I get it back? Is there an option somewhere that I need to activate, or has the feature been deprecated?

JoA59, it’s on both iPad and iPhone. In iMessage, click on the person you share with. Then click on the map window. Then click on the folding map icon in the upper right top. You will then see two choices below the map: Explore and Satellite. Then select satellite view.

I absolutely HATE only seeing the standard only view. I have 3 teens and I check their location daily. I don't need a route to them!!! What I do need is to see an exact satellite view. It makes no sense to have changed it back to standard view. Apple should know parents check their kids location to make sure they're where they say they are and we need satellite view for that! Having a real time view helps us to visualize where they are. I can't visualize where they are in standard view. Atleast with satellite we could see it in real time because I may not be able to visualize the address they're at on a blue and gray map. It's the stupidest update!

If everyone would contact apple through chat and speak to someone maybe it will get them to fix this issue. I chatted and they sent me to a page where I could request for certain features to be brought back and I filled it out. I no longer have the link since I deleted my text with them but they should be able to give it to you. Maybe if enough of us complain they will bring back the satellite view.

If you go into Messages and then tap the contact's name and then the small map with their location, you get to Maps in general Map View.

At the bottom there is the time it would take you to get to the contact's location. Tap in that, it will open the satellite map, where you can zoom in and see, as previously, the actual satellite image of where your contact is.

I hope that helps, just discovered this by trying things out. Had the same thought as you all, this is a very useful feature.
