HomeKit automation not working after iOS 17

All my automation are not working anymore after updating : I don’t think connection is the problem because I can control all my devices (2 HomePod paired and Apple TV 4K) with home app without problems.

Automation are completely broken, I try to delete them and reboot HomePods but I can’t fix them, they don’t trigger when they should but they don’t work even with “verify automation” button

The phone could perfectly control all devices except with automations

HomePod, 17

Automations / Shortcuts / Siri… in my experience are all completely unreliable since iOS17.

Sorry, no solutions here, just a list of some of the “bugs” I’m experiencing.

  1. Simple on/off automations for Lights which worked previously, no longer work
  2. Lights frequently turn on at 70% brightness instead of 100% - Adaptive lighting has never been used on any bulb
  3. “Siri Turn On / Off the Lights in room xx ”…. Confirmation tone, but no action
  4. I’m looking in the Home App at two configured, activated Automations which have just appeared…a) When The First Person Arrives Home’, b) When The Last Person Leaves Home’. I don’t / have never used or created any Automations which are Location dependent
  5. Some Shortcurs / Automation's will work with Verify whilst building, but then fail when implemented, unable to discover why, so I just abandon
  6. Frequently need to ask twice to get Siris attention
  7. Several radiators (named Radiator Room Xx) which are controlled via TRV’s. Which Siri has had no problem with until iOS17. Now it’s….

“Siri Turn Off the Radiator in the Hallway” ….”Sorry, I don’t find anything like that in your Home”…

OK, so I’ll rename the TRV to Heating….

“Siri Turn Off the Heating in the Hallway”  ….Responds with “On It!, followed by a confirmation tone”. However, nothing happens. (other than the false, misleading confirmation tone)

Try for a second time….”Siri Turn Off the Heating in the Hallway” ….Viola, the Automation worked as expected

What is interesting is, requests to turn off TRVs in other rooms are actioned OK. Even several which are in different rooms but Grouped. It appears Siri just sometimes doesn’t like the TRV in the Hallway.

Additionally, I’m tired of checking and resetting, settings reconfigured by iOS updates! PRIVACY & SECURITY > LOCATION SERVICES > SYSTEN SERVICES  >

  • Significant Locations
  • IPhone Analytics
  • Routing & Traffic

…Are all set to ON.

The last 3 updates, gave all reconfigured these settings. Why? This has been widely reported since iOS17, so why are updates still being pushed with known bugs?!

More debugging - less Emojis!

“It just works”… sadly that time has passed. The only thing you can rely on these days is Bugs.

It’s no longer fun or efficient. Just tiresome. My whole Apple experience these days is frustrating, tedious and far from enjoyable. Second guessing, fault analysis and workarounds are now a daily activity.

Currently trying to work out why my phone no longer makes a noise when I receive an iMessage. Just discovered another Post, seems I’m not alone.

My automation stopped after iOS 17.1.1 when the tvOS was also updated by the way and coincidently my LGtv also had an update. This last device can function as a hub for HomeKit-devices. But the LGtv-app on my iPhone 15 pro, does not sync with HomeKit.

I only have simple automations for my Nanoleaf lights enabled, for which I also need to keep the Nanoleaf-app on my phone, that cannot perform automations, according to the info in my app. Probably because it needs Matter to perform such.

A few days ago my automations worked again. But.... 2 days ago it stopped working again.

Things I tries but did not work: Reset tvOS to factory defaults, delete Home-app on my phone restart it and re-install the Homa-app again, switch off my TV, delete the Nanoleaf-app and reinstall, delete automations and set them up again etc.

It could be that the bug sits in the iCloud. But I have no idea why this odd behaviour happens.

Same problem but only when I have two homes set with two HomePods on different routers.

funny thing is that the sauna automations work my house automations don’t. Not sure if it has to do with iOS 17. Was using the manufacturer app before. Now I have to continue using that app because of the non working HomeKit automations.

Updated to 17.2 > some progress!

Played with existing Automations and audio playback would only play 1 second then cut off or play a completely random audio track.

So I then trashed the old Automation and recreated with a new title (name) > Success. Automation worked.

What’s noteworthy here….if I recreated the Automation, but gave it the old title (name), it failed, just playing 1 second of audio. (Guess this is some iCloud sync issue)

Only tried it with a couple of broken Automations, so can’t say that issue is resolved, but looks promising.

Similar problem. Have multiple home kit compatible plug sockets set on automation. Has been working perfectly until recent updates. Automations don’t work at all and to turn off from home app it now takes a phone hard restart and multiple tries to get anything to respond.. starting to wish I invested in a different home automation brand

Samme issue. Have an automation which trigger lights off when TV on. Stopped working with TVOS 17.0. Automation lights on when TV off, works. Have an LG TV with LG WEB OS 04.50.51. Was updated around same time. Have tread in Facebook Homekit community, with a guy with earlier WEB OS and identical issue. All is pointing towards 17.0. There is a similar thread on Reddit.

I have a similar problem. Any location based automations (arrive home, leave home) and automations that are only set to run when I am home stopped working after updating to iOS 17. I have spent hours on the phone with Apple support and I am REALLY sick of deleting and recreating automations and scenes, resetting setting, etc. Sometimes recreating automations will get them working for a day or two, then they'll stop again.

I used to love my home automations, now I tell Siri to f*** off everyday when I have to announce that I am home to get the lights turned on. That's just one of the things that iOS 17 broke. I have never bean so disappointed in Apple. They have truly failed.

I was disappointed with the Home app. although I really like the whole system, but after 10 years I was disappointed for the first time and I don't trust it anymore. plus I don't understand why when I start the Home app, it often shows "loading" now, there is no instant reaction anymore. i have to wait and then i can press the lights or something. I put it on Home Assistant and also ordered Homey Pro in addition and I'm waiting for it to arrive. This will now be a choice and I will go with the universal option. No more trembling with Apple addiction. I have apple tv 2021, maybe it can't deal with the processor anymore and shows "loading"?

Before iOS 17 I had an automation to play music from my Apple TV to my AirPort Express at 6 in the morning. Worked great before iOS 17 but doesn't work at all any more. What is strange is that after the automation is triggered, I can see it playing when looking on my iPhone via control center- media control- "Control Other Speakers & TVs" but no audio is being sent from the Apple TV. If I turn on my tv the Apple TV seems to be in off/stand by mode and as soon as I turn the Apple TV on, it starts sending audio to my AirPort Express.

Same thing is if I manually try to play music from my Apple TV -> AirPort Express using my iPhone via "Control Other Speakers & TVs", it does not work until I manually turn the Apple TV on.

I have been in contact with Apple support the past few days since I was having the same problem with a Wemo light switch.

Everything was set up correctly, they ran some tests and have been calling me back to keep me updated.

I am expecting a call tomorrow from them but yesterday I decided to move the light switch to another location in my house. After installing I realized automations started working properly. I don’t believe it has to do with the change of location since before I could turn the switch on and off, only automations didn’t work.

Now the switch works properly, I believe that they fixed something since I called them and it’s now working.

Give it a try and let me know if you now can use your automations.

Thanks

I share your disappointment with Apple. I used to really enjoy my home automations and have invested a lot of money in devices that I can control through Homekit. Also, I tried to upvote this post, but the website just says I'm upvoting too fast. I took time to read your post and have not upvoted any other posts today, so I don't get it. Just another bug.

Update: After updating tvOS to 17.5.x and iPhone to iOS 17.5.x still no automatic trigger on to my Marantz receivers 8015 / 6014 and Kef loudspeakers. Automation HomeKit for audio “on” is still broken. Before version 17.0 everything was working fine. By the way, with voice command Siri, no problems at all!

My automations are mostly working except for the ones that use my location. Those will occasionally work for a few days then stop again. It used to be really nice to have Siri turn on the lights when I got home. It’s really mean to give us a nice capability then just fail to support it.
