HomeKit automation not working after iOS 17

All my automation are not working anymore after updating : I don’t think connection is the problem because I can control all my devices (2 HomePod paired and Apple TV 4K) with home app without problems.

Automation are completely broken, I try to delete them and reboot HomePods but I can’t fix them, they don’t trigger when they should but they don’t work even with “verify automation” button

The phone could perfectly control all devices except with automations

HomePod, 17

Automations / Shortcuts / Siri… in my experience are all completely unreliable since iOS17.

Sorry, no solutions here, just a list of some of the “bugs” I’m experiencing.

  1. Simple on/off automations for Lights which worked previously, no longer work
  2. Lights frequently turn on at 70% brightness instead of 100% - Adaptive lighting has never been used on any bulb
  3. “Siri Turn On / Off the Lights in room xx ”…. Confirmation tone, but no action
  4. I’m looking in the Home App at two configured, activated Automations which have just appeared…a) When The First Person Arrives Home’, b) When The Last Person Leaves Home’. I don’t / have never used or created any Automations which are Location dependent
  5. Some Shortcurs / Automation's will work with Verify whilst building, but then fail when implemented, unable to discover why, so I just abandon
  6. Frequently need to ask twice to get Siris attention
  7. Several radiators (named Radiator Room Xx) which are controlled via TRV’s. Which Siri has had no problem with until iOS17. Now it’s….

“Siri Turn Off the Radiator in the Hallway” ….”Sorry, I don’t find anything like that in your Home”…

OK, so I’ll rename the TRV to Heating….

“Siri Turn Off the Heating in the Hallway”  ….Responds with “On It!, followed by a confirmation tone”. However, nothing happens. (other than the false, misleading confirmation tone)

Try for a second time….”Siri Turn Off the Heating in the Hallway” ….Viola, the Automation worked as expected

What is interesting is, requests to turn off TRVs in other rooms are actioned OK. Even several which are in different rooms but Grouped. It appears Siri just sometimes doesn’t like the TRV in the Hallway.

Additionally, I’m tired of checking and resetting, settings reconfigured by iOS updates! PRIVACY & SECURITY > LOCATION SERVICES > SYSTEN SERVICES  >

  • Significant Locations
  • IPhone Analytics
  • Routing & Traffic

…Are all set to ON.

The last 3 updates, gave all reconfigured these settings. Why? This has been widely reported since iOS17, so why are updates still being pushed with known bugs?!

More debugging - less Emojis!

“It just works”… sadly that time has passed. The only thing you can rely on these days is Bugs.

It’s no longer fun or efficient. Just tiresome. My whole Apple experience these days is frustrating, tedious and far from enjoyable. Second guessing, fault analysis and workarounds are now a daily activity.

Currently trying to work out why my phone no longer makes a noise when I receive an iMessage. Just discovered another Post, seems I’m not alone.

Same for me as well. I do have one other wrinkle. Some of my automation groups only work on SOME of the devices in the automation. It does works, but leaves out some items in the automation without much rhyme or reason. Really weird.

It seems to be iOS 17 issue…

Homehubs: All AppleTVs with a couple of 4k TVs in the mix.

Update:

Now it doesn’t work Even with manual controls

I can use the homepods as temporary speakers of the AppleTV but if I ask Siri to turn off the tv replies that it is not connected

I have an automation that should start the music on the homepods instead it turns on the AppleTv that is not even among the devices of that automation

Impossible to use

Same here. I used to have a shortcut to start a playlist 'when bedtime ends' but since IOS17 it runs randomly. Annoying because I missed many wakeup, now I need to setup a conventional alarm with this one-same-song every day... I've tried to disable, reenable, uncheck and re- all the settings, and it works with the 'test' button, but I can't find a solution to that. Was working for several years already without one failure...

And I thought it was me. After updating to 17 (now 17.1) shortcuts sometimes work and sometimes generate error messages. I have an automation to play BBC Sounds Radio4 at a certain time in the morning. It worked randomly in 17 and not at all in 17.1. Tried triggering it with a silent alarm and when alarm goes off condition, but no difference. Now checking to see if the automation is failing to punch through the new Standby feature, but other random failures and this thread suggests it's a bug in the Shortcuts/Automation code. It needs to be fixed!

I’m in the same boat as you guys are. My lights automations seem to be working correctly but all the automations involving playing music at a certain time of the day or night stopped working altogether. I tried everything, rebooting my WiFi, restarting and rebooting the HomePods, I tried toggling off and back on my location services, signed off of my iCloud account and then back on. I also toggled off my music library sync and then back on but nothing has solved the issue. Music won’t connect to the home pods. My WiFi has a strong signal so I reckon that’s not the problem (also because it has always worked before) they just stopped working… I actually don’t want to create a new home and set everything back up again, it’s nonsense, I’d simply like them to just work as they did before

So, last night I returned to the earlier, simpler arrangement whereby iOS 17.1 Standby is off, and the automation is triggered by a time (not an alarm, which didn't work), triggering a shortcut to Play Radio 4 via BBC Sounds. And it worked. Last time this set up worked, it failed the next morning. I will leave things undisturbed to see what happens tomorrow morning.

My simple automation (time-based trigger for a shortcut to Play Radio 4 via BBC Sounds) worked for two days, so I turned Standby back on to see if that was the (an) issue. It all still worked the third day! I left this arrangement untouched to see what happened the fourth day. It failed. The trigger went off (iPhone and connected Apple Watch let me know), which I then had to manually turn off, but it failed to trigger the automation and play the radio. Same the fifth day. I have reported to Apple via their feedback page, but looks like it will need a fix in iOS ...

So, my automation to Play Radio 4 (via BBC Sounds) at 05.57 every weekday should just work. And so it seems to if I remember to completely quit BBC Sounds and then relaunch it, but have it play nothing before I go to sleep. But if I leave it open but paused on my iPhone, it does not work the next morning. And if I quit the app completely but don't re-launch it, the automation triggers and launches BBC Sounds, but doesn't play. Adding a second Play to the automation after a wait of a few seconds doesn't work either. Contrary to the whole point of Apple, it doesn't "just work".
