On MacBook Pro why are my photos automatically filed on my screen

There must have been a link I pressed long time ago that splattered my screen with all my files and photos. I do not want to create a file for these photos and just have file folders on the screen. I can't figure out what caused this to happen in first place. Can anyone figure this out? It seems to be screen shot photos that were not all screen shot on my MacBook, sox are screen shots from my iPhone. some are jpg photos and png

The screen background by default shows a colorful picture or drawing of a California, USA location as a backdrop.

The files you see superimposed are EXACTLY the files from a folder in your User-Id named "Desktop"

Use Finder to create a new folder inside the Desktop folder? A new Folder Icon with the same name appears on the Desktop.

Drag Desktop pictures into your new Folder? They disappear from the Desktop, because they are inside the new folder.
