Optimized Battery Charging Not working

I've had a M1 Macbook Pro for about a year and a half now and its been working great but I have had issues with the Optimize Battery Charging feature.

The setting has been on the entire time I have had the laptop and I have a consistent schedule. I use the laptop on battery for maybe an hour a day during classes and the rest of the time it is plugged into power and connected to my external monitor. My Macbook pretty much never goes under 80% battery.

Despite this, my battery stays locked at 100% 24/7. I have never once seen the charge on hold at 80% or anything.

I noticed the drop in my battery health about 2 months ago and tried turning the optimize battery setting off and on as someone on reddit suggested but its been a while now on the same schedule as usual and it hasn't kicked in.

I understand leaving the macbook plugged in at 100% charge for like 22 hours a day isn't good for battery health, but I had assumed that doing so consistently would make the macbook figure out that schedule and start managing the battery properly.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks for the help

The rule of thumb—if you are near the mains leave it plugged in, if you need the portability then run on the battery only—this is how you optimize your battery charging and extend the working life of your battery by reducing the cycle count.
