iPad glitch when iPhone rings or Alarm sounds

When I receive a phone call or alarm on my iPad synched from my iPhone, the iPad experiences a glitch that causes it to continuously play then first note from the ringtone. Almost like it’s stuttering.

So far, the only way I've found to make it stop is to restart the iPad, which is not acceptable because the iPad lives in my kitchen permanently fastened to the wall, and sometimes when this happens, I'm at the other end of the house & don't hear the stuttering for an hour or more. Or if I am in the kitchen, I have to stop what I'm doing & go reboot the iPad.

I'd like to know how to PREVENT the stuttering in the first place. Why does it do this? How do I make it stop doing this?

iPad 5th Generation, iPadOS 16.6

iPhone 11, iOS 16.6.1

Thanks!

Following your advice, I did a force restart & that did not work. I am not surprised since I had done that several times in the days before updating to 16.7.

So then following your next suggestion, I reset the settings, and then had a few issues with not having an option to even receive phone calls on the iPad & not being able to put in my iCloud password to iMessage and FaceTime, all of which ended up with me logging out of my iCloud account on both my iPhone & the iPad, then logging back in, and then waiting for everything to reconnect before being able to try this again. Sigh.

The good news is that after all of that, it seems to be working now! I tested it both plugged into power and not plugged in, as well as both with the iPad awake and asleep.

Here’s hoping it stays that way! *fingers crossed*

Thanks so much for your help. :-)

Begin with a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:

OK, both the iPad & the iPhone have 16.7. It still happens. I've included a link to a video of it.

In the video, I am using my house phone to call my iPhone, which has Wi-fi calling enabled to receive the call on the iPad. Instead of answering the call, I send it to voicemail on the iPhone, which then makes the iPad start stuttering.

Interestingly, this stuttering also happens when I'm choosing sounds, so it's not just the Wi-Fi calling. Here's a link to a video of that. You can hear the previous sound stutter when I preview another one, plus at the very end, it stutters, but very quiety.

The iPad is plugged in. (And I want it to remain so.)

I'm delighted that you have managed to resolve the issue. Taking a structured approach, as suggested, hopefully leads to a favourable outcome - even if additional issues are encountered along the way.

It's perhaps unlikely that the glitching phone and alarms were in any way linked to you having to sign-in again to your AppleID account. This was likely "fall-out" from fixing the primary issue.
