I am unable to change default timer tone on iPhone after updating to iOS 17

I can no longer change the default timer for when I say “hey siri, set timer for 15 minutes”. It plays some super quiet tone that I can’t hear while I’m working. If I want to change it to one of my own that’s 4x louder, I have to stop and set a timer manually. Which causes a problem with my job. Yeah sure it takes only like a minute, but at my job, it’s a big deal.

why did Apple remove the custom default timer tone option?? What is the possible benefit of this? Even worse, why did they set it to the quietest tone they could??

Found a workaround to this irritating problem. Apparently after you set the default timer (1 sec), press start and let the timer countdown and sound off. After that it will stick to the default sound you had set. I am on IOS 17.1

Not being able to change default sound for timer is not very user friendly. Can’t imagine the thought process of the Apple engineers that decided to remove this functionality.

Apple ! Bring back default timer sounds,

I need to put away this wind up mechanical timer I have to carry everywhere now.

Apple please let us set the default tone, and volume either through the clock app or through general: sounds & haptics. The latter would make the most sense since it’s where all the other default sounds are located. They added the timer name feature, but forgot to add Siri support and default support in app or sounds and haptics and need to correct this in an update

I use it to cook food but my timer is on the default noise it won’t default to the sound I use all the time for the timer so it’s annoying because the sound I always use is loud without freaking me out but the radial sound I can’t exactly hear it it’s pretty useless and annoying

I “downgraded” to iOS 16 and all is fixed. As well as a few other issues I had with iOS 17. There are steps that I took that probably are again apples policies, so I won’t post them here. Sorry 😕

100% horrible update. I’ll stick with iOS 16 as long as possible!

Chiming in (heh) to express my frustration with this too. It must be a bug, seems more like an accidental regression, an oversight, than a deliberate design decision. Hopefully we can raise enough of a fuss here to get Apple’s attention. I’m very particular about my alarm sounds and this problem has been surprisingly disruptive.

It works for Siri too. If it doesn’t maybe try deleting all your previous timers and/or update to iOS 17.1 if you had not done so.

iOS 17.1

Delete all the recent timers at the bottom.

Create a new timer for 15 seconds or so (manually, not with Siri) and choose the default sound you want.

Then put phone to sleep while you wait for the timer to go off.

After it goes off and you stop it, then ask Siri to set a timer for 15 seconds and it should be set to the last sound you used.

Your suggestion doesn’t solve that problem. Great if you want to manually start a timer (and manually choose the sound every time) but we are talking about defaults and activation via Siri.

Please let us make the decision on what we want as the default timer! I can’t hear the new timer tone as not only is it too soft, it’s so quiet! I want radar back as default as it can be heard from many many feet away! This needs to be fixed on next release… too many people are asking for it to be fixed!

After updating to iOS 17.1 delete all the recent timers at the bottom of the timer app.

After it goes off and you stop it, then ask Siri to set a new timer for 15 seconds and it should be set to the last sound you used above.
