I am unable to change default timer tone on iPhone after updating to iOS 17

I can no longer change the default timer for when I say “hey siri, set timer for 15 minutes”. It plays some super quiet tone that I can’t hear while I’m working. If I want to change it to one of my own that’s 4x louder, I have to stop and set a timer manually. Which causes a problem with my job. Yeah sure it takes only like a minute, but at my job, it’s a big deal.

why did Apple remove the custom default timer tone option?? What is the possible benefit of this? Even worse, why did they set it to the quietest tone they could??

Found a workaround to this irritating problem. Apparently after you set the default timer (1 sec), press start and let the timer countdown and sound off. After that it will stick to the default sound you had set. I am on IOS 17.1

To set the timer tone, open the timer and scroll down to "When Timer Ends", then set the sound you want to ring when the timer ends. As others have said, once you use it once manually, it also rings with this same tone when you ask Siri to set the timer.

I was having difficulty because, after my phone updated to iOS 17, the phone and timer were ringing with the same tone. I was hanging up on people who phoned because I thought it was my timer going off. I have now realized that the phone ringtone can be set up in "Settings", but the timer ringtone can be set in the Timer app.

After spending 2 1/2 hours on the phone with Apple support and senior support there, I was told the new iOS 17 update has made the default radial and cannot be changed. They are noting our complaints and hopefully will change that back to where we have options on our tone when we set alarms and timers through Siri - at this moment 4/13/24 it cannot be changed from radial. Unfortunately it does set off my PTSD, which is seriously bad. Any alarms that I set must be set through a manual setting. If I tell Siri to set one, it will automatically go to default and radial. Hopefully many of you will complain and they will get this changed ASAP.

I just tried it with my iPad Pro 12.9 running iOS 17 and it worked for me. Assuming the clock app looks/works exactly the same on all iPads:

Open the timer app and at the bottom, to delete them, tap the X on the left of each recent timer.

NOT using Siri, manually create a 10 second timer with the default sound you want. Let it go off. Then go back and do the same thing, manually creating a new timer with the same default sound you want but this time set it for 15 seconds. Let it go off.

Now ask Siri to set a timer and it should now use the new default sound you wanted.

After updating to iOS 17.1 delete all the recent timers at the bottom of the timer app.

Create a new timer for 15 seconds or so (manually, not with Siri) and choose the default sound you want.

Then put your phone to sleep while you wait for the timer to go off.

After it goes off and you stop it, then ask Siri to set a new timer for 15 seconds and it should be set to the last sound you used above.
