Safari problems since Sonoma upgrade

Safari is unusable after waking since the Sonoma upgrade. As soon as I click on the browser the Beachball appears, mostly not spinning. This persists for a while then the normal Cursor appears. So I click again and the beachball appears again. Sometimes it settles down and sometimes I have to right click the Dock icon, which reads "Application not responding" and I have to Force Quit.

Context as follows: 2 tabs on YouTube open when the machine's lid is closed. It's returning these YouTube tabs to their proper state that seems to cause the issues. This has not happened on any previous version of macOS.

MBPro M1

Safari has 1Blocker and Adblock installed - this also hasn't been a problem before.

Safari is a disaster since Sonoma. Writing this with Firefox - no problems. I have no added extensions or ad blockers on Safari. Been a Mac user for thirty-five years. Do not recall ever having an issue with a system upgrade. I am using a M1 MacBook Pro.

I am also having issues with Safari (17.3.1) running on Sonoma 14.3.1.

I have had same or similar with 17.3.0 and 14.3.0

Sometimes page renders really strangely. Hard to explain. Screen shot from bbc website attached.

This one shows page rendering strangely, image not loading, images from other pages loading.

This is how it should look:

No extensions are installed.

Issue appears and disappears without reason.

Same thing. Safari is telling me I’m not connected to internet however Firefox worked fine..YESTERDAY. This morning I started it up and it worked ok and then all of a sudden cursor wouldn’t move and then screen went blank and restarted. Then when I went to start Firefox now it won’t connect to Internet and just keeps spinning. My iPad, phone connected to wifi works just fine. I don’t have anything extra running on my computer antivirus or otherwise. So at a loss of what do next…

Since installing Sonoma on my Mac mini 2018 (which was listed as compatible with the new iOS) I haven't had this much trouble with a Mac since the 1994 crazy that was the Performa machines.

Safari gags and freezes, tabs disappear and randomly quit. Typing is in fits and starts - what usually takes me 5 minutes is taking upwards of 20 because I need to reboot all.the.time. Making me much less productive at job - boss is noticing. Not a good look. Fix this!

100% agree and no doubt this will also be "edited". My other posts have been. I had a Performa lol! Oh heavens! And I have been with Mac since the MacPlus and so this is what happens when you stay loyal for half a century... Safari is totally unusable and it's been over a month. There are no fixes at my end. The fix has to come from Apple with an upgrade and an upgrade that remembers that they still make computers and not just iPhones. I have an iMac less than 2 years old that put me back over 4K. And I bought AppleCare as I always have. And I have not been able to use the computer since this upgrade with any level of comfort or without hours of frustration.

Alas (and it may be different for some) I upgraded to 14.1 as soon as I saw it thinking "finally, yay!" and no improvement at all. Very disappointed in this. I] have basically lost the use of my very expensive desktop computer for a month now and have been relying Ito get by on my iPad. I honestly dob';t know what to think next. Re-installing didn't work for me either. I think getting this fixed by week's end would be a really strong show for Apple. I would love to be able to use my iMac again before Christmas. I would be nice to have it back and woking before it reaches it's second birthday...

This problem has cleared entirely for me.

variously, but not in order of execution - deselect AdBlock features, close and reopen Safari, reactivate AdBlock.

several reboots (not done in pursuit of solution)

Update.

switch to YouTube paid subscription.

Somehow along the way whatever it was cleared/resolved and all behaviour is now back to what I expect from macOS.

I am certain at this point that Ventura was the BEST iOS I have ever experienced and I am regretting my actions to "upgrade". I generally don't DL a new iOS right out of the gate but thought what the heck - Venture proved to be amazing - what could go wrong. . . .

I've been advised to revert back to Ventura, which is a bit of a process I've not done before so am timid about it - but good golly - this Safari seize iOS is just making me nuts.

"Performa survivors unite! " Yes! We definitely need T Shirts!

Seriously after the last tweaking (I'm using 14.1 now) things actually got worse! (I didn't think that was possible.)

If I can find the time (so many many many hours wasted already!) I'm going to try and hop back to Ventura. This is just ridiculous. I spend easily 5 X as long to do simple things. I have to shut down and reboot constantly. I honestly feel like I deserve $ compensation at this point. And nothing from Apple. Not a peep.

BTW Were you advised by someone on this forum or by Apple support folks to go back to Ventura and if so did you get instructions for that? I am getting desperate here. If I didn't have a very large desktop (iMac) I fear this "device" would have been hurled at the wall by now...

I really can't see the point in using it at all until this is fixed by Apple. Absolutely I can say this: The problem is not at my end.

I miss my Mac Plus... A little slow but it worked...

"We must have a t-shirt with at least free shipping and laundry for cleaning the t-shirt :-)"

Apple has so far been unable to find solutions for these various problems with the Sonoma 14.0 update, let alone address the issues with Sonoma 14.1.

I finally decided to waste two days updating and reformatting my iMac. I then updated to Sonoma 14.1 and everything seems to be working normally.

What remains "bizarre" for me is that the upgrade of my Intel MacBook Pro worked perfectly with Sonoma 14.0. Of course, I didn't upgrade to Sonoma 14.1 to avoid another nightmare!

Browsing Mac forums in different countries, I found that Intel iMacs and Intel Mac minis, as well as some MacBooks with the M1 chip, were more frequently affected by this unsuccessful update.

Apple thanks you for doing less but better, and no one will complain about this return to the updates that made Apple's reputation in the past!

Apple support, where are you?

Nov 5, 2023 6:11 PM in response to Lucio203

I am beyond frustrated and TBH at this point I do not want to reformat for fear of trashing the entire computer. I'm updated to 14.1 on an iMac that's less than 2 years old with an Apple M1 chip. Is that the problem? That I went for the chip (as I was advised to do by Apple)?

It's been over a month and Safari just isn't working. I reboot every few minutes. This is crazy!

I tried to reinstall using a safe boot and the clock kept changing saving expected time 23 hours etc so I gave up on that and reinstalled from my external hard drive.

I feel like I am out of options and I honestly do not have two days to try and fix this. My nerves are shot. I can never seem to get through to the "right" person at apple support, I get put on hold and passed around like some wet rag and have to keep repeating the same info over and over and then I'm on hold again. I cannot face that anymore..

Why isn't Apple Support seeing these messages and posting something of use?

Apple iMac M1 2021 (with AppleCare) Trying to run on MacOS Sonoma Version 14.1 (23B74). Safari not functional.
