How to fix randomly stuck Magic Mouse after Sonoma M1 Pro update

I've encountered problems with my Magic Mouse since updating to Sonoma. The mouse cursor behaves erratically; it doesn't freeze but doesn't move as intended. I've attempted several solutions, including:

  • Restarting the computer
  • Clearing the NVRAM cache
  • Resetting Bluetooth
  • Disconnecting and removing the mouse

Despite these efforts, the issue persists. Presently, my CPU usage is below 20%, and I have 3 GB of RAM available. My device is an Apple M1 Pro, and I'm running Sonoma 14.0. There is no issue with the keyboard and touch bar. I am using an external monitor (keeping my laptop closed) and the touchpad is working fine when the issue occurs.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Hi sudeeshn,

It seems you're having some trouble with your Magic Mouse tracking and we want to help.

The symptoms you're describing seem align with an issue with dust or debris on the sensor.

Try cleaning out the sensor with compressed air as detailed on the Apple cleaning page:

If your Magic Mouse or Magic Mouse 2 isn’t tracking properly, there might be a hair or other debris on the sensor lens. Turn the mouse over and inspect the sensor window using a bright light. If you see debris, use compressed air to gently clean the sensor window.

That is a completely ridiculous comment... Yes I agree hardware needs to be replaced from time to time. But if you buy a new Mac today you get the latest OS which currently appears to have bugs. Additionally if the OS is in a production release then it isn't unreasonable to expect something as basic a mouse to work properly. So I think it is fair to blame the new OS especially when it has happened with every new OS release in previous years... Ask Google I'm sure you will quickly be able to confirm that. Yes no one forces anyone to upgrade... but with all the beta testing that is done... Which I actively take part in, to then have issues in the production release is disappointing.

I am a highly educated user, with years of experience, working in a technical arena and as such I can assure you this issue isn't because hardware needs replacing! If that was the case then it would never get fixed in a dot release and everyone would have to buy a new mouse every time a new version of the OS is released, which quite obviously isn't the case.... It is simply s frustrating Bluetooth issue that Apple will address at some point.

Well, my MBP is running Sonoma 14.1 within an hour since it was released. No problems whatsoever with the Magic Trackpad, and even with a no-name bluetooth mouse.

If you consider that the software/OS is not working well with your device, why not go back to the earlier software/OS? Just stating some accessory doesn't work with a given MacBook doesn't mean, the MacBook or the MacOS is bad, but maybe the accessory is bad. There's no guarantee that an accessory would/should work with a given device, is there?

I have a WIRED non-Apple gaming mouse with the exact same problem. I thought it was a mouse problem, so I bought a new one. That did not fix anything. This is NOT a mouse problem. And it has nothing to do with issues with the Magic Mouse. This is a really SERIOUS BUG that has slowed down my workflow considerably. The only way to (temporarily) fix it is by restarting the computer. But that works only for a few hours and then the problem returns. This has become a major issue for me because I work in 3D design and do very detailed work in a variety of applications. That's why I have a wired mouse – to prevent any Bluetooth lag. I may soon have to downgrade to OS 13 if this continues. It has become a major problem.

I tried Sudeeshn's suggesting in display options but that also does not fix the problem . . . so now from more reading wondering if it has something to do with being connected with external monitor. I will disconnect the monitor and if mouse still freezes randomly, or when playing a quicktime movie I have to force restart, that will remove yet another possibility and send the issue pointing again directly at Apple having a mouse bug. If the problem is resolved, then why the h does having an external monitor connected cause the problem?

Agree this seems to be a software issue. My failure mode to similar symptoms was while using Safari on a web-app that allowed to change the interface with it depending on if you used a trackpad or a mouse (2021 M1 with 14.4.1, Safari Version 17.4.1 (19618.1.15.11.14)). Strange mouse behaviour started when these settings were changed for the web-page (web-app). Web page appeared to have an auto-detect feature and set a default behaviour for interacting with it. Once changed, the mouse behaviour became erratic. It did not correct with: reboot of mac; reset of mouse history (power switch + click); mouse disconnect & reconnect; nor NVRAM reset. Magic mouse v 1.9.2. Spare mouse which was off did not display any unusual behaviour once connected to laptop.

This feels like an OS thing caused by Safari.

Any other suggestions for fixes?
