How to fix randomly stuck Magic Mouse after Sonoma M1 Pro update

I've encountered problems with my Magic Mouse since updating to Sonoma. The mouse cursor behaves erratically; it doesn't freeze but doesn't move as intended. I've attempted several solutions, including:

  • Restarting the computer
  • Clearing the NVRAM cache
  • Resetting Bluetooth
  • Disconnecting and removing the mouse

Despite these efforts, the issue persists. Presently, my CPU usage is below 20%, and I have 3 GB of RAM available. My device is an Apple M1 Pro, and I'm running Sonoma 14.0. There is no issue with the keyboard and touch bar. I am using an external monitor (keeping my laptop closed) and the touchpad is working fine when the issue occurs.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Fact - The issue never existed in the Beta Program... It only appeared in Live!!!

Fact -The very same thing happened with previous OS releases!!

Fact -This is not a USER issue!!!

Fact - There is nothing wrong with Peoples Mouse Or Touch pad

Fact - There is an Issue with the Production version of the OS with regards to Bluetooth connectivity under certain circumstances.

Fact IF you buy a new Mac right now you get a version of the new OS with has this Issue!! BUT if you don't upgrade your current OS on a stable system you will not have the issue.

Fact - you are entitled to your own opinion, but thankfully that will not change the FACTS.

In a way, I am glad I didn't buy one, when I was tempted with such a low price and just 1 cycle in it, an unsold one at the shop. There are a few more such unsold M1 MacBooks still there. I just didn't want to be the experiment buying first-time-out-processor computer. I once had a Windows RT, lovely thing that never took off. After hearing all these complains here, I'll wait till M3 becomes mature, to change the present Intel MBP, that is, if it ever breaks down.

Magic Mouse is working without glitches. Everything is working well.

Well, my MBP is running Sonoma 14.1 within an hour since it was released. No problems whatsoever with the Magic Trackpad, and even with a no-name bluetooth mouse.

If you consider that the software/OS is not working well with your device, why not go back to the earlier software/OS? Just stating some accessory doesn't work with a given MacBook doesn't mean, the MacBook or the MacOS is bad, but maybe the accessory is bad. There's no guarantee that an accessory would/should work with a given device, is there?

Well, I never had any issue like that until my update to Sonoma. Got the same behavior since the first release 14.0. I'm currently on 14.1 and getting the issue mostly when using some heavy tasks (XCode+Preview and/or Simulator or anything that requires GPU to render graphics in 3D.

Btw I have multiple devices at home (3xMacBook, 1xiMac + 1xMacMini) and experiencing it only on my MacMini-M1 (the only one running Sonoma).

Well, that MacMini M1 is running Sonoma for ARM, while my MBP is running Sonoma for Intel. Two different Sonomas. Maybe, the Magic Mouse's software was written for Intel, it came so long ago. The Magic TYracpad also came a long time ago, in the Intel days.

But it was working just fine until Sonoma... why is the mouse? I have had this MacMini since its release and have NEVER had anything like it before.

You'd have to ask that question from yourself.

Like you said, it worked before, now with Sonoma (for ARM), it doesn't. It might be that Sonoma for ARM (for M1) is in conflict with Magic Mouse's software, which is surely had been written for Intel.

Seems like safari was causing the issue for me in many cases.

I'm deprioritizing the process using the command below:

So far so good :)

Glad that you got it working.

Only, how come Safari interfere with/how Magic Mouse work? Can you give more insight on that? Thanks.

Just got myself also a Magic Trackpad 2 a few days ago. Now I have both, the Apple magic mouse and trackpad. It got connected quite simply and also works quite well. Both of them are used ones, even the MBP. The inbuilt trackpad is not that comfortable to use -- I have some wrist problems, so an external Magic Trackpad appears to be ideal. CPU load, energy load, while using both Magic devices is practically none.

In your case the energy load is terribly too high, so maybe you should show your Mac to an authorised technical service.

I have a WIRED non-Apple gaming mouse with the exact same problem. I thought it was a mouse problem, so I bought a new one. That did not fix anything. This is NOT a mouse problem. And it has nothing to do with issues with the Magic Mouse. This is a really SERIOUS BUG that has slowed down my workflow considerably. The only way to (temporarily) fix it is by restarting the computer. But that works only for a few hours and then the problem returns. This has become a major issue for me because I work in 3D design and do very detailed work in a variety of applications. That's why I have a wired mouse – to prevent any Bluetooth lag. I may soon have to downgrade to OS 13 if this continues. It has become a major problem.

Work on 3D using a NATIVE mouse yourself BRO!!! HAHA
It feels like you don't use your Mac to work. I use it to code on Xcode and SONOMA is making my life terribly miserable.

Some people can't get used to the Magic Mouse, but I can. 3D is not a big deal. I used to in AutoCad and other related apps, in Windows and in Linux. I still have those machines. I bought the MacBook on a whim. And, I like it. I bought an Intel Mac as I know Intel devices. I don't code, but I can read code, and play with it. I am from the Linux world. I like the MacOS, simply because it is Unix and because of some interesting native apps, and because of the Magic Mouse, and the (Magic) Trackpa . I am not afraid of upgrading. That's what we did using Linux, not just one OS, but quite a few different ones. I am not afraid of upgrading Windows too. I am not the type to blame the OS for one's own mistakes. Before you upgrade, you make a backup. And, update all 3rd party apps, as they are not guaranteed to work well yet with the new OS. Disconnect 3rd party accessories, before upgrading. Simple thing, people don't do. They are quick to blame the new OS.

Now, on the question of drawing/sketching etc with MacOS, I can do that with the Magic Mouse and with the new acquired Magic Trackpad. You talk about coding with Xcode, but have you ever designed and built large buildings and structures?

Sonoma is good, very good. I've used FreeBSD too, a few years ago.

Come on bro - disconnecting devices before upgrading the OS is something we did in the '80s but we live in the 21st Century now. Apple needs to improve the upgrade cycles and how they deliver new features. It's not acceptable to get so many issues as we have lately. I also like linux (cannot say the same of windows) but having way less issues upgrading my linux machines lately. I had to send back my watch ultra because of dead pixels on the screen and sometime ago my headphones. So it's not just software - they need to improve the hardware also and they will do only when people like you stop accepting regressions like that. It's not acceptable.

And no SONOMA is not good. I don't use any new feature made in this OS.

I like performance and somenthing reliable before of anything else like gadgets on the screen. come on.
