How to fix randomly stuck Magic Mouse after Sonoma M1 Pro update

I've encountered problems with my Magic Mouse since updating to Sonoma. The mouse cursor behaves erratically; it doesn't freeze but doesn't move as intended. I've attempted several solutions, including:

  • Restarting the computer
  • Clearing the NVRAM cache
  • Resetting Bluetooth
  • Disconnecting and removing the mouse

Despite these efforts, the issue persists. Presently, my CPU usage is below 20%, and I have 3 GB of RAM available. My device is an Apple M1 Pro, and I'm running Sonoma 14.0. There is no issue with the keyboard and touch bar. I am using an external monitor (keeping my laptop closed) and the touchpad is working fine when the issue occurs.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Hi sudeeshn,

It seems you're having some trouble with your Magic Mouse tracking and we want to help.

The symptoms you're describing seem align with an issue with dust or debris on the sensor.

Try cleaning out the sensor with compressed air as detailed on the Apple cleaning page:

If your Magic Mouse or Magic Mouse 2 isn’t tracking properly, there might be a hair or other debris on the sensor lens. Turn the mouse over and inspect the sensor window using a bright light. If you see debris, use compressed air to gently clean the sensor window.

Chdsl, The point being when people invest the money they do in Apple products for their business or personal use then they should expect the same issues to come up after every major release!! Don't get me wrong I am invested in the whole Apple ecosystem both at Home and in my business as they make the best products for sure.... just a shame they keep making the same issue again and again.... I have no doubt it will be resolved in the near future in a discreet update with no mention of the error but in the meantime it is extremely frustrating.

You can't use"ifs" and "buts"...

It is not fair to blame the new OS.

If you've taken part of the Beta program, you wouldn't say things like that. You'd have caught the problem beforehand. Anyway, the mouse "problem" is how the user uses the accessory, not the OS problem.

There's nothing wrong with the Magic Mouse, neither with the in-built trackpad.

Seriously you just seem to be lacking the basic understanding of this issue....

To answer your question Nobody!!! BUT just like if someone bought a new car they would expect the engine to work.... IF someone did buy a new Mac, Or someone upgraded to the new shiny OS that Apple are promoting then it is not unreasonable to expect it to work as expect.

Anyway I will leave you to bumble through life. All the best

Hey chdsl! No one have to force us to use whats available on our system(Macbook) - the point is once update is out to main customers it should NOT create problems, instead it should fix them. I know Apple will fix this one at some point as MaxieMax mentioned, but currently at my programming job this is very frustrating as the tool(Macbook) we use is buggy which slows down our development process.

Neither the MacBook nor the new MacOS is buggy. It is your MacBook and/or your mouse/trackpad are faulty. It is how you use your devices. We here cannot correct the MacOS, for it is not open source. Contact Apple with your complains.

My MBP is 4 1/2 years old, went through few new MacOSs and still doing quite well with Sonoma 14.1 The internal trackpad, keyboard and the Magic Mouse doing very well too. I am going to by an external Magic Trackpad too in a few days, just for fun and for usage. And, by the way, I've never been a customer of Apple.

In a way, I am glad I didn't buy one, when I was tempted with such a low price and just 1 cycle in it, an unsold one at the shop. There are a few more such unsold M1 MacBooks still there. I just didn't want to be the experiment buying first-time-out-processor computer. I once had a Windows RT, lovely thing that never took off. After hearing all these complains here, I'll wait till M3 becomes mature, to change the present Intel MBP, that is, if it ever breaks down.

Magic Mouse is working without glitches. Everything is working well.

Btw I have multiple devices at home (3xMacBook, 1xiMac + 1xMacMini) and experiencing it only on my MacMini-M1 (the only one running Sonoma).

Well, that MacMini M1 is running Sonoma for ARM, while my MBP is running Sonoma for Intel. Two different Sonomas. Maybe, the Magic Mouse's software was written for Intel, it came so long ago. The Magic TYracpad also came a long time ago, in the Intel days.

But it was working just fine until Sonoma... why is the mouse? I have had this MacMini since its release and have NEVER had anything like it before.

You'd have to ask that question from yourself.

Like you said, it worked before, now with Sonoma (for ARM), it doesn't. It might be that Sonoma for ARM (for M1) is in conflict with Magic Mouse's software, which is surely had been written for Intel.

Just got myself also a Magic Trackpad 2 a few days ago. Now I have both, the Apple magic mouse and trackpad. It got connected quite simply and also works quite well. Both of them are used ones, even the MBP. The inbuilt trackpad is not that comfortable to use -- I have some wrist problems, so an external Magic Trackpad appears to be ideal. CPU load, energy load, while using both Magic devices is practically none.

In your case the energy load is terribly too high, so maybe you should show your Mac to an authorised technical service.
