How to fix randomly stuck Magic Mouse after Sonoma M1 Pro update

I've encountered problems with my Magic Mouse since updating to Sonoma. The mouse cursor behaves erratically; it doesn't freeze but doesn't move as intended. I've attempted several solutions, including:

  • Restarting the computer
  • Clearing the NVRAM cache
  • Resetting Bluetooth
  • Disconnecting and removing the mouse

Despite these efforts, the issue persists. Presently, my CPU usage is below 20%, and I have 3 GB of RAM available. My device is an Apple M1 Pro, and I'm running Sonoma 14.0. There is no issue with the keyboard and touch bar. I am using an external monitor (keeping my laptop closed) and the touchpad is working fine when the issue occurs.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Hello Sudeeshn,

Thanks for providing us with those additional details. You've done a great job isolating the issue. To ensure that we're covering all of our bases, we also suggest completing the following steps:

"Clean the sensor

Find the sensor on the bottom of the Magic Mouse, then use compressed air to spray the sensor or use a cloth to wipe the sensor. If you use compressed air, do not invert the air can while you're spraying.

Check track mouse settings

In System Settings, you can change mouse tracking, double-click, and scrolling speed.

Check for interference

Learn how to resolve Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference."

More details here: How to keep your Magic Mouse tracking smoothly

If the issue persists, we suggest that you reach out to Apple for further assistance. You can follow this resource to connect with them: Get Support

Take care.

Work on 3D using a NATIVE mouse yourself BRO!!! HAHA
It feels like you don't use your Mac to work. I use it to code on Xcode and SONOMA is making my life terribly miserable.

Some people can't get used to the Magic Mouse, but I can. 3D is not a big deal. I used to in AutoCad and other related apps, in Windows and in Linux. I still have those machines. I bought the MacBook on a whim. And, I like it. I bought an Intel Mac as I know Intel devices. I don't code, but I can read code, and play with it. I am from the Linux world. I like the MacOS, simply because it is Unix and because of some interesting native apps, and because of the Magic Mouse, and the (Magic) Trackpa . I am not afraid of upgrading. That's what we did using Linux, not just one OS, but quite a few different ones. I am not afraid of upgrading Windows too. I am not the type to blame the OS for one's own mistakes. Before you upgrade, you make a backup. And, update all 3rd party apps, as they are not guaranteed to work well yet with the new OS. Disconnect 3rd party accessories, before upgrading. Simple thing, people don't do. They are quick to blame the new OS.

Now, on the question of drawing/sketching etc with MacOS, I can do that with the Magic Mouse and with the new acquired Magic Trackpad. You talk about coding with Xcode, but have you ever designed and built large buildings and structures?

Sonoma is good, very good. I've used FreeBSD too, a few years ago.

Come on bro - disconnecting devices before upgrading the OS is something we did in the '80s but we live in the 21st Century now. Apple needs to improve the upgrade cycles and how they deliver new features. It's not acceptable to get so many issues as we have lately. I also like linux (cannot say the same of windows) but having way less issues upgrading my linux machines lately. I had to send back my watch ultra because of dead pixels on the screen and sometime ago my headphones. So it's not just software - they need to improve the hardware also and they will do only when people like you stop accepting regressions like that. It's not acceptable.

And no SONOMA is not good. I don't use any new feature made in this OS.

I like performance and somenthing reliable before of anything else like gadgets on the screen. come on.

I'm sure Apple developers are doing a good job in releasing upgrades. I don't find any problems with those upgrades. No one forced me to upgrade. I did that on my own free will. My MBP is running Sonoma 14.1.1 and both the Magic Mouse and the Magic Trackpad are working well. The battery usage is excellent. On power, it goes to ~80% and stays there with optimised charging mode. And, it is a 4 1/2 year old MBP.

Well, still the same mouse that you buy in the apple store. Should be working with their 3.5k macbook no?

It could be that the emulation part of software for the Magic Mouse might not be working well with your silicon Mac. It works absolutely well with my > 4 1/2 years old Intel MBP. Even the Magic Trackpad works well too. And, on Sonoma 14.1.1.

Also, we all seem to have the same problem. Why opening a new thread.

People don't have the same problem with their devices. They may look alike, but not always the same. If you open your own thread, other users, who'd try to help out will ask you questions, trying to find solutions.

I'm having the same problem. It just started happening when I upgraded to Sonoma. I will select something in a drop down menu and it jumps to the selection below it or above it. For example, in photoshop I'll select JPEG in the drop down menu and the mouse jumps/skips to the option below it that says JPEG 2000. Even when using the pen tool in photoshop it's skipping, when I let go it moves. It skips and isn't making an accurate selection. I thought maybe it was just Adobe programs but I guess not.

I am having similar issues since updating to Sonoma (now on v.14.1), but with my Apple Magic Track Pad. Frequently during a day's work a tap is read as a 'mouse down - hold' gesture and the item that I have simply tapped gets dragged around the screen until I can get it to let go. This is happening on a M1 Mini AND - Please Note: with the track pad plugged into the Mini with a Lightning cable (no bluetooth involved). This is a pretty big annoyance - but has not directly led to any data loss yet - although it did make a hash of my Google spreadsheet yesterday. Fingers crossed for a fix in 14.xx.

I will test this out, thanks for suggestion.

I am still having dead mouse issues where I have to shut off the mouse and use trackpad on M1 Pro Macbook Pro for a short time before turning the mouse back on to get it working again; and also can't use Quicktime to play movie clips (quicktime/mouse acceleration issue?) because soon after a clip starts playing, the mouse goes dead and then the system hangs. I have to force a restart and then use VLC or other movie player, and then no crash/hang, Mac runs like a top. Manifested with the advent of Sonoma. A fix for Apple to make. And No, I shouldn't have to revert back to previous OS. I didn't cause the issue.

Yes, that's right, Apple is getting worse and worse step by step. But because they are so big, they laugh at people like us who realize this. They couldn't care less.

Unfortunately, the only thing they can think of is to make everything more and more complicated. Even more functions and even more functions, but keeping the old ones. When I look at Apple's system settings now, there is hardly any difference to Windows.

Until two or three years ago, I converted countless people and persuaded them to use Apple. I haven't been doing that for a long time now.

And me taking the time to write this is a waste of time. I did it anyway! Haha

Not fixed

Have had to abandon my magic mouse

I've tried every "fix" I've come across & the best I've managed was about 5 minutes of it working normally before it reverted to this stuck behaviour

I'm using an ancient Logitech Wired mouse plugged into my MBP dock and have had exactly 0 issues with that except for the loss of the gesture support
