iPhone Keyboard Lag after iOS 17 Update

Hi!

After the iOS 17 update the keyboard typing experience is very unpleasant. I noticed the autocorrect feature is improved and available in many languages, but the keyboard has a major lag. After a sentence or two, the keys are not popping up, the prediction freezes and the text doesn't show up, even though I'm still typing. Few seconds later all the words I've been typing started to appear very fast and catch up again with my writing. I have already cleared the keyboard cache and restart the phone several times. iOS is up to date (17.0.2).

This is only one thing that's worst, there are many other aspect about the UI, but the keyboard one is the most upsetting.

I'm on iOS 17.1.2 and the issue persists

I've already tried reseting the keyboard dictionary, removing my secondary keyboard and since that didn't work, I even re installed IOS

The only thing that fixes the issue, as other persons have pointed out, is disabling predictive text and autocorrection

For me, autocorrection and predictive text is indispensable, so I installed google keyboard. It looks awful, but the typing experience is so much better

It is sad that a third party keyboard does it better than the apple one

I'm having this issue on an iphone 14 pro max running IOS 17.1.2 and the issue has been present since the first iOS 17 update

I can report a stuttering keyboard also with a brand new iPhone 15. But I think it's a bit more complicated than that. I can also report that this is reproduceable on an iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 14 Pro.

  • First, it depends on how fast you typing
  • second if you use swipe-touch it's not stuttering (the reason is you are usually much slower with that)
  • it seems to be a performance problem with the predictive text feature trying to keep up with a fast typer
  • restarting / clear apps does not take any effect.
  • It's a permanent bug

I prefer typing on single letters rather than swiping over the keyboard for generating words. If you doing this for years you are much faster than the swipe input variant (because of friction of your skin on glass). But when using swipe-input I can't recognize any lag.

So some Users won't experience this at all. Depending on speed of input and method of input-

before the predictive text feature this wasn't a problem except Apple's autocorrect is the worse I ever experienced. Now with iOS 17 it's better but it seems there is a performance problem Apple has to look into.

If you slow down in typing you will experience that the stuttering get's less. If you get up to speed again, the problem occurs. No matter which device. iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 15, there is actually no difference in this.

At least in my opinion this is something considered a bug. Since Apple implemented a feature that's lagging when used under speed, which is a quite common usecase for a software keyboard.

I've been experiencing the same issue with my iPhone XS Max, fully updated. Recently upgraded to iPhone 15 Pro and surprisingly met with the same issues. I disabled all auto-correction and predictive text, basically everything other than my own fingers typing. It solved the issue. Obviously want auto-correct and predictive text back at some point, hoping to be fixed in next update.

This isn't true.

Please read the comments before posting wrong answers. This will confuse people that got this problem and stumble across this site.

As stated many times before resetting the dictionary does not solve the issue. You will loose all your saved words. Then for a limited time the issue won't occur, but soon after you will experience the same again. Tested by many users here just to loose their saved words.

Also restarting, disabling other language or disabling the spell checking doesn't solve the issue since you are disabling functionality instead of solving the bug.

It is a bug in iOS and not a wrong setting, it happens since iOS 17 with the implementation of the new predictive text function. Apple messed something up there.

To really get someone from apple fixing the problem you got to report it here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Probably Apple won't even monitor this page.

I just wanted to let you know that in my case disabling the secondary keyboards seems to solve the issue. I was using two keyboard languages, italian and english, (I'm italian but sometimes I use the english keyboard if I need to type long english senteces). Disabling the english keyboard seems to have fixed the problem. I know it's not an acceptable solution, but it may be a temporary workaround until this bug gets definitely fixed.

Hi there,

I’ve been experiencing the same issue after the iOS upgrade. Try the below and it should resolve the issue.

These steps will reset all your settings and they will go back to default.

All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home Screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted

1. Navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset Phone >

2. Tap Reset

3. Tap Reset All Settings

I've actually been able to greatly reduce the keyboard lag by following the steps detailed in this article:

Keyboard lagging in iOS 17? Here's how to fix it (ithinkdiff.com)

It does involve turning off the Predictive Text feature but in my case I don't tend to use it all that much.

These are still just band-aid workarounds and I'd love to see this and other issues fixed. I wish I could roll back to iOS 16 because none of the new features are transformative enough for me to even warrant the update!

Lesson learned: I've gone ahead and turned off all automatic iOS updates.

Here are two things I did that actually worked for me (which are just band-aid workarounds nonetheless):

Reset the keyboard dictionary

If you have deep customization then maybe skip this suggestion and try the next one below.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Navigate to General and select Reset.
  3. Tap on Reset Keyboard Dictionary.
  4. You may be prompted to enter your device passcode for confirmation. Enter it, and then tap on Reset Dictionary.

Disable predictive keyboard

  1. Launch Settings from the Home screen on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and select General.
  3. Tap on Keyboard.
  4. Locate the Predictive toggle and switch it to OFF.
