Bluetooth crashes in MacOS Sonoma (M1 MacBook Pro)

I just upgraded to MacOS Sonoma. Now my bluetooth crashes every 15-45 minutes. Bluetooth turns off entirely (not just devices losing connection).

I already tried all the "bluetooth issues" troubleshooting I found online:

  • unpaired and repaired everything
  • deleted `/Library/Preferences/com.apple.bluetooth.plist`
  • reset bluetooth module with `sudo pkill bluetoothd`
  • restart computer
  • turn off wifi

Nothing has worked.

Now I notice a few Crash Reports in the Console app.

Note this does NOT represent all the times bluetooth has turned off (like I said, it probably every 15-45min), but I wonder if maybe it can provide some clues.

Any advice on how to proceed?

I chatted with Apple and they are aware of the issue. However, it would give the issue a higher priority if more people got in touch and notified them they have the same problem.

I also noticed that with macOS 14.0 devices would auto-reconnect after BT crashed, but with macOS 14.1 devices do no longer automatically re-connect and I often have to power-cycle my keyboard and mouse to get them to connect again.

Put a cork in it. Your Mac works, great, nobody cares. Leave the people alone who are reporting issues. Just because it works with your specific Intel config, doesn’t mean there is no issue for anybody else. You’re on Intel, everybody reporting this issue is on Apple Silicon, stop bugging people with nonsense.

Well, I’ve been spending some time looking at this from multiple angles, and it seems to be an M1 problem. M2 and M3, as well as Intel seem to be unaffected. Same as with the USB DAC issue, where audio stutters/crackles when you connect an amplifier via USB. It seems there is a problem in the M1 Chip that causes at least two very hard to solve issues in Bluetooth and USB. I guess the resale value of tose Macs just dropped even more…

I had the exact same issue after Sonoma upgrade. Waited until the latest 14.3 Sonoma even and still bluetoothd crashes repeatedly and airdrop is unresponsive.

From the logs it looked like a permission issue that I never managed to get resolved or find the root cause of.

After 3 months now of trying everything I now completely wiped the drive and went back to Ventura.

Everything works perfectly now including bluetooth, all my bluetooth devices ( AirPods, keyboard and mouse ) as well as airdrop

My mouse, keyboard and trackpad all disconnect randomly. Doesn't seem to be a pattern to it. The only way to reconnect is to plug the charging cable into all the devices, which sometimes doesn't work.

How is this even an issue? It's absolutely infuriating and mind-boggling that this bug can appear after years of it not even being an imaginable issue. Please fix this ludicrous bug Apple.

This is still happening to me on my Mac Studio, constantly, with 14.3.1. Just updated today. This has been happening to me for at least 3 months now. Every update that comes out, I cross my fingers and hope that it fixes the issue, but it doesn't.

To add onto the list of issues, every once in a while when I attempt to use Touch ID after it disconnects/reconnects all my peripherals, the pointer and keyboard are very slow to respond and end up skipping, and once it also disconnected all the devices immediately after they reconnected.

I keep submitting bug reports through Feedback Assistant, but nothing is acknowledged or changed. Why hasn't this been fixed yet? It looks like there's quite a few of us experiencing this.

these commands may work if your not in clamshell mode. if you are in clamshell with a wireless keyboard and mouse, your dead in the water. continuously hitting the return key or clicking the mouse will force reconnection or plugging in the wireless devices will reengage. the bluetooth is going to sleep just like apple tech support is asleep. hey apple when are you going to fix this problem? are you out there? are you paying attention to these boards or are we wasting out time posting?
