iCloud doesn't work on MacOS 14 Sonoma

I tried to open iCloud from MacOS 14 Sonoma desktop, and was asked to allow it in the Settings.

I tried to toggle the switch on, and switched back to off after a few seconds.

After upgrading to MacOS 14 Sonoma, I no longer have access to documents stored on iCloud.

SOLUTION: Create a new profile on your machine with same perms (e.g. Admin), then login to that new profile and sign in to your iCloud profile using your Apple ID.

FIXED!

Senior tech at Apple indicated iCloud with some user profiles not syncing with Sonoma update and this is the work-around. Soon a 14.1 release will be provided to address this issue.

Your solution does not work because all of the buttons associated with I-cloud do not work. Glad it worked for you, but from the thread it appears that this issue effects oll functions related to I cloud. Yes even the “sign out” button.

Trying to avoid a complex fix as well I followed the advise of xz8t83 and set up a new User with admin privildges, restarted the Mac and logged in as new user, still no internet access, logged out, gave up hope, only to find issue resolved on my original account. Actual Solution in under 3 min. , leaving only a ghost profile. thanks xz8t83.

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities shellhornj,

The following information should help you get your iCloud setup on your Mac after upgrading:

• Sign in to iCloud
Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Apple ID. If you’re using macOS Mojave or earlier, click iCloud. Enter your Apple ID. When you sign in, iCloud is turned on automatically.
Have questions about Apple ID?

• Customize your iCloud Settings
Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Apple ID. If you’re using macOS Mojave or earlier, click iCloud. Choose the apps— like Notes, Photos, and iCloud Drive — that you want to use with iCloud.Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Apple ID. Set up iCloud on your Mac

We hope this helps!

So after working with a senior support specialist for more than 3 weeks, I was told to wait until a future update fixes the problem and she said that would be maybe next month or even longer. It's unbelievable that after all the money people are paying for iCloud that Apple can't figure this out. They should revert everyone back to the previous OS since that worked until they can figure this thing out once and for all, but I'm sure they won't do that as that would be admitting they messed up. I hope Apple reads these messages, but I'm sure they don't.

Same general issue here across two Macs, one Intel, the other M2. The common denominator: Sonoma. What wound up working was to disable iCloud drive. One that was off, the Finder behaved properly. I could open an app and open a file, whereas before, I would never get the file dialog box and the app would behave as if I had never tried "File open" at all.

But I, too, could not originally login to iCloud at all. Don't know how that resolved itself, but once it did, and I wanted to use iCloud drive, in addition to an unusable Finder, I could not select "Data and Documents" to sync because the system informed me that I had "too many files, folders, nested folders" and some such nonsense that prevented it. Still don't know why it claims that, but after turning off iCloud drive, everything works as normal, including the iCloud services outside of iCloud drive.

Since updating to Sonoma 14 this morning I can't sign in to my icloud account, it doesn't syc the files and I cant sign in to my Outlook accounts. I have tried the suggested fixes on the forum and they don't work. I have deadlines for my PhD thesis and I have spent the last 3 hours trying to sort this out. Either Apple fixes this or how do I update to a different version to end this ridiculousness? HELP...
