"Sign in with Passkey" an option for Apple ID, but I cannot see how to enable it?

When signing in to my Apple ID, there is an option to "Sign in with Passkey". However, once logged into my account, I can't find anywhere to add a passkey. Is this a half-implemented feature? Or am I missing something? All I see is an option to add "Security Keys", but that's not the same as a passkey.

Please, do not bring more confusion with useless longreads - read the question and thread attentively.

The question is "how to CREATE passkey for Apple ID/iCloud specifically"!

The confusing thing is that it is mentioned directly there that it is possible:

You might also be able to sign in to any Apple website using a passkey. Enter your Apple ID (or an email address or phone number that you use with Apple services), then select "Sign in with Passkey" from the sign-in screen. Follow the onscreen instructions to use your iPhone or iPad to sign in using a passkey. To sign in using a passkey, you need a supported web browser, Bluetooth enabled on the device that you're browsing on and your iPhone or iPad, and iCloud Keychain enabled on your iPhone or iPad.

But there is no info how to create that passkey!

Like most things Apple, Apple does not support third-party physical passkeys. So, they suppose you will use your iPhone / iPad as the secured device already signed in - as one.

And the only time you interact with it is when it is needed. I just went to set mine up and ran into the same walls as you all. I would suppose Apple does it to keep themselves insulated from security threats by making it opt-in only when needed and with something you already possess and are signed into.

it is not yet enabled by Apple unfortunately.

The roll-out of passkeys changes organisation by organisation. It's quite frustrating.

Microsoft require you to have their authenticator - no thanks. Apple don't allow third-party management..... etc.

I think this is because, they realise people could end-up completely locked out of their accounts. I keep pondering what happens if you have device failure or loss across the board.... or scenarios where you are on holiday and your phone is stolen. So trying to introduce secure redundancy.

I'm interested in this stuff, and take my security seriously, but for the common person, they could come into real trouble.
