Internet connection lost following Sonoma update - Fixed

I updated to Sonoma 14.0 over the weekend on my Mac mini (Apple M2) with no issues.

This morning I switched on and had no internet connectivity via WiFi on Safari, Chrome or Edge.

So I restarted my Mac a couple of times, restarted the router, toggled WiFi on and off, checked for any new updates (duh - no internet connection...) and tried a connection via hotspot on my mobile device - but no joy. I even plugged in a LAN cable between my Mac and the router, still nothing.

Then I checked these forums and found a solution. On my Mac I went to:

System Settings > Network > Filters

Where I found two filters enabled which were part of my antivirus software. I turned these off via the antivirus app and everything came back online immediately.

I guess these filters are now out of date following the Sonoma update and were blocking the connection.

Hope this helps.

TBH my antivirus is a hangover from my previous Windows PC and I just installed it because I already had the licence paid for.

I am aware that Macs have good security - but didn't know that no viruses operate in the system.

The worst case would be an file attachment received via e-mail or via a file transferred from a Windows Computer that is infected with a Windows Virus.

Then, that specific file is transferred, by the same above methods to another MS Windows computer.

In effect, your Mac computer would become the conduit for infecting another MS Windows computer

This may be a silly question - but do I need to activate anything to enable security on my Mac, or does this just happen automatically in the background?

The macOS has the bulletin abilities, without any user purposeful actions to keep the computer safe and secure.

The other part of Security is the User, like you and me.

Those aspects are very will outlined in several articles from a very well respected and long-term contributor @John Galt

If and only if this is a Company Owned computer and is part of an MDM Service - disregard the below

If this is a Personal Computer what follows is worth your attention and intended in a friendly way.

There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX  Foundation and Permission Limitation.

The Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that can not be opened by the User nor by Third Party Applications.

The only Entity that can open and modify or alter this Volume is Apple.

That would occur when a update or UpGrade is performed.

The Only thing this Antivirus software is protecting is the Bank Account of the Developers and for zero return to the User aside from the problems this software creates.

AntiVirus Developers purposefully Market their product to create a “ Fear Factor “. In so doing, creating a False Need for their Product.

Security. Built right in

Mac app security enhancements

The The Built in Security  is all that is required to protect the computer.

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

This will include BitDefender

This will included Norton Antivirus

 Sophos Av Software

Intego AntiVirus

 McAfee

Avast AntiVirus
