Why do some of my contacts have a poster while others have their assigned photo when they call?

I recently upgraded my iPhone 13 Mini to iOS 17. One thing I noticed is how my screen looks when one of my contacts calls: for some, I see the new poster feature while for others, it's the photo I assigned to them (like with all contacts in previous iOS versions). The thing is, I never went into any of my contacts and messed with their settings regarding the photo and poster. Why did this happen and how do I change it back to only assigned photos on my screen when my contacts call?

How can you only add a contact photo without adding it as a poster?

I also think that it should be an option. I don’t like the fact that people see a full screen picture of people that are calling me. It is a privacy issue and should be an option, not the default. Apple needs to correct this fast!

They won't see your comment here, so use the Feedback link in my earlier post if you think Apple needs to do anything.

You only answered part of my question. The other part was: why do only some of my contacts have a poster when they call? For example, just this week I've received calls from both of my parents (I upgraded to iOS 17 in September). When one parent called, I saw a poster on my screen. But when the other parent called, their contact photo was on my screen (like on previous versions of iOS). Why did this happen if iOS 17 is supposed to have posters for all contacts? And again, I never set the posters; I didn't even know they were one of the new features.

I'm experiencing the same issue where I just want a thumbnail image for each new contact and I end up with a poster and thumbnail.

Unfortunately I can't find anyway to disable the poster function.

Having worked on software development teams for numerous fortune 500 companies in Silicone valley for over 45 years what I've learned and I'm not saying that's what happened this time, that development teams have to justify their work based on user adoption.

Sometimes they do this the easy way by writing software code that defaults to on for all users at the next software version release. That's the fast track to 100% adoption rate.

User feedback is a valuable way to invoke change, so keep the comments flowing.
