Bluetooth issues on my iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 17.0.3

I am having issues with bluetooth dropping the connection in my car and air pods pro since I upgraded my phone to iphone 15 PM and IOS 17.0.3. Any help would be greatly appreciated. this is my main phone and I can't take the chance of having unstable IOS build on it. Any suggestions or better yet can apple just make something that works as it should for $1200 thanks!

Thanx a million

1. Apple released the iOS 17.1.2 update, which fixed the Bluetooth issues on iPhone 15 Pro.
Update iPhone to new iOS 17.1.2
2. Unpair the iPhone from the car.
3. Remove the Bluetooth HandsFree link from your iPhone.
4. Reboot iPhone.
5. Now pair the iPhone in the car.

I confirm that the problem is still present. Installed iOS 17.2 this morning and this afternoon I tried to use the AirPods (2nd generation): same issues with repeated disconnection/reconnection and jerky audio. I repeat: I can fix it momentarily by doing a forced restart of the phone (volume up, volume down and side button pressed until the Apple logo appears).... But yI can't continue like this ...

Just had a call with a support agent about the issue. Seems they are not yet aware of a general problem. He suggested the following procedure:

  1. deactivate VPN connection (from McAfee)
  2. remove all bluetooth devices (besides Apple Watches) from the list
  3. deactivate bluetooth
  4. restart iPhone
  5. reconnect my devices (which is my BMW, my Beats fit Pro and other bluetooth devices)

I'll try that one out and see if it fixes the issue. If not - i have a case number where i will post a follow up to Apple if the "problem solving" failes once again.

My experience following three calls and one online chat with advisors was that they could only offer the basic stuff: switch it on and off; forget and re-pair with the car; reset network settings; reset phone: change device name.

I would expect that all calls will be logged and once the reported problem reaches a critical mass, the problem will get onto the engineering backlog for resolution … so get reporting!

One advisor did run some diagnostics remotely but concluded there were no device issues and that I should contact Audi and request a software update for my car.

The latter approach doesn’t resolve the broader problem facing AirPod, Beats, Bose, VW, Porsche, Ford and Dodge owners.

In my experience to date, the problem seems limited to the 15 Pro and Pro Max, both of which uniquely have the new A17 Pro chip.

I linked this thread last time I spoke to Apple.

Got IP 15 recently and as i experienced BT connection with my car and some Alexa speakers i decided to go yo the Apple store. Thy tested the bluetooth and sait it is working, but since it was under warranty they offered to replace all the internal hardware. I had doubts it will help, as i saw IOS 17 complained for other models. Still i went for it and after 2 hours i had to go to Verizon to reactivate the phone. It worked well for a few days and now i have the same problems again….

so it is quite certain a software problem

Waiting for Apple to fix it

I just got off the phone with a senior tech @ Apple. I told him about the issues with the 15PM and Bluetooth. He was taken aback by the issues and about how many people are having the same issues as seen here on this forum that has almost 25,000 views. Anyway upon reviewing all his sources he discovered an entry at 3:26 PM EST today that acknowledges a Bluetooth issue with the 15 Pros and that it will be fixed with a future software update. It states to explain this to the customer when they call in with this issue. Long story short, Apple has finally acknowledged they have a problem! Let's hope a fix comes sooner than later.

A hypothesis: There exists a Bluetooth 5.3 connection error isolated to iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models running the A17 Pro chip causing disconnectiom issues in older models of cars.

My summary: iPhone 14 or iPhone 15 connects in older vehicles, so there should be no reason why the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max shouldn't work, unless there is a hardware, software or firmware issue specific to these more advanced models using the A17 Pro chipset.

Apologies, I get a bit geeky here so pass by if you don't do tech ...

My observations:

    1. My iPhone 15 Pro on iOS 17.2.1 repeatedly disconnects at exactly 40 seconds in my 2013 Audi A4.
    2. This problem has persisted through various iOS updates since purchasing my iPhone 15 Pro.
    3. A number of posts in this thread highlight problems with iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone Pro Max and either older Audi, Porsche or VW cars.
    4. I have tested my iPhone 15 Pro in a 2019 VW Polo and there are NO disconnection issues.
    5. A number of posts highlight no problems with older phones.
    6. I have tested my car setup with an iPhone XR, iPhone 14 and iPhone 15, all running iOS 17.2.1 and in my experience, there are NO disconnection problems.
    7. Phone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max use the new A17 Pro chip, whereas the iPhone 14 and 15 tested in Point above use the A16 chip.
    8. A16 and A17 Pro chips both support Bluetooth 5.3.

The common factors for me are:

    • Older vehicles
    • 15 Pro and Pro Max
    • A17 Pro chip

A bit of research around Point 1 (disconnection at 40 seconds), Point 7 (Bluetooth 5.3) and the Bluetooth Organisation, led me to Bluetooth 5.3 Core Specification Volume 6 Part B Section 5.2 which states:

"If the procedure response timeout timer reaches 40 seconds, the ACL

connection is considered lost (see Section 4.5.12). The Link Layer exits the

Connection state and shall transition to the Standby state. The Host shall be

notified of the loss of connection."

This refers to termination of a bluetooth connection between two devices.

Does this seem like a coincidence?

I wonder if older cars are using the low data rate Bluetooth connections eg. BLE, whereas modern cars are using A2DP which supports streaming i.e. data transfer. This should not be a problem though ...

A wider search of bluetooth disconnection issues on other devices ranging from tablets, PCs, airpods and cars all point to this 40 second benchmark. This is not a new phenomena isolated to these phones and our cars, it should be a straightforward software fix for Apple to render successfully.

Ok. So here’s an update from the troubleshooting I’ve been able to do today:

Swapped bluetooth modules in my car (335i) with another one I have on hand. No change. Same issue observed.

Paired the car bluetooth to an old MacBook Pro I have. The bluetooth radio in the car is made by Cambridge Silicon, model (in hex) is 0x0057.

The modules in both my BMW 335i and BMW 528i are identical in terms of bluetooth supplier and certification.

Bluetooth Audio (using spec 2.1+EDR) is totally fine. No dropouts I was able to notice. It’s only when the phone switches to the Bluetooth Handsfree Profile (HFP). Looking at the bluetooth module in my BMW, it was certified by the FCC and Bluetooth standards committees in September 2009. So I assume my car is using HFP version 1.5. Version 1.5.1 was not standardized until 2019.

Question to everyone who’s having issues with their car: What is the year, make, and model? I’m thinking we should start cross-referencing Bluetooth versions. Given the ages of many of the cars mentioned, I’m thinking there’s a bug in the way HFP 1.5 has been implemented on the 15 Pro. Looking at a teardown of the iPhone 15 Pro to see what the manufacturer of the bluetooth chip states in regards to support for 1.5 specifically (though Bluetooth should be backwards compatible.)

Update: iPhone 15 Pro with 17.3 installed.

2014 Ford Escape with Sync 4.3 running.

Today I was finally able to connect the phone, receive (and maintain) a call, and listen to music from the phone through the car's system. This was the first time I have been able to connect to the car since getting the 15 Pro.

In order for this to happen I had to delete ALL of the paired devices (which was only 1). Once there were no other phones paired I was then able to pair my phone.

My partner's phone is running 17.2.1 and she had no issue connecting. Next step will be for me to see if I can reconnect her phone to the car.

Not sure what the explanation is...

Jan 24, 2024 2:55 PM in response to ml041582

It is. The only iPhone with WiFi 6E.

Talked with senior support today, where I gave them additional info. Their last point of triage from engineering was to make sure the software was updated on the car side (it is) and to call the manufacturer of the “accessory”. BMW phone support is practically useless with this stuff, so I’ve reached out to Harman/becker, the manufacturer of the module used for Bluetooth in my BMW (and many other cars too).

The Harman/becker data sheet for the Bluetooth system used by BMW in my car shows that the Bluetooth chip is a CSRBC06. This chip is probably used by all the other manufacturers’ Bluetooth systems which are affected, and very likely with other Bluetooth systems as well.

Engineering is engaged. I gave more info on my specific BMW model/bluetooth system, even sent over the engineering specs and data sheet I had from years ago. Have a call tomorrow with them as well.

Oh and this thread most definitely came up (from my end)!

You're Not the Only One:

I'm seeing quite a few reports of power issues n relaunch to after installing the iOS 17 updates. Question is: "Just how many people have actually reported it to Apple?"

So, Inform Apple of This:

Do your Part. Give Apple feedback on this. Apple won't get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what issues are occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of your issue, if you don'r report it to Apple.

How to Give Feedback:

  1. Go Here: Feedback - Apple Music - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for "Feedback Type"
  3. Select: "Browse" for "What Apple Music feature is your feedback about?"
  4. Comment: that this all started after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread.
  5. Proceed from there as necessary

I have exactly the same problem, only with hearing aids, on newly purchased IP15. Never an issue with my iPhone 11. Have posted here and tried everything for three weeks. Yesterday, I spent about an hour on the phone with Apple Support, they downloaded logs and info from my phone. Lets see what happens. You should also call them, they need to know this is happening widely and is not an isolated issue. FYI: Apple Support tel # is 800-275-2273.

I tried my Audi's factory connection. Connects sometimes, disconnects, one way conversation till it completely disconnects. Have Amazon echo auto as well, same results. AirPod Pros...same. It's a software issue but only seems to be on the 15 Pro Max. Called Apple support tonight and said no one is having this issue. 🤣 After I informed them there are hundreds of people complaining of the Bluetooth issues on Apple community help as well as Reddit she agreed that there is probably an issue. She did a remote diagnosis on my phone and everything came back as working. I said I know what it's saying, but I'm telling you as an owner of just about every single version of iPhone since the first, I have never experienced this before. She did have me reset the network settings but I know that won't work. I'll verify in the morning. Apple needs to at lease admit there is an issue and you are working on it.
