Bluetooth issues on my iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 17.0.3

I am having issues with bluetooth dropping the connection in my car and air pods pro since I upgraded my phone to iphone 15 PM and IOS 17.0.3. Any help would be greatly appreciated. this is my main phone and I can't take the chance of having unstable IOS build on it. Any suggestions or better yet can apple just make something that works as it should for $1200 thanks!

1. Apple released the iOS 17.1.2 update, which fixed the Bluetooth issues on iPhone 15 Pro.
Update iPhone to new iOS 17.1.2
2. Unpair the iPhone from the car.
3. Remove the Bluetooth HandsFree link from your iPhone.
4. Reboot iPhone.
5. Now pair the iPhone in the car.

My previous phone was an iPhone 12Pro - it worked flawlessly with the car on iOS16.X

The lead Mechanical engineer had an iPhone 15 Pro Max. At that stage we were both running 17.1.2

His phone connected without issue.

Mine didn't.

I've had an ALL NEW PCM head unit replaced by the dealer (under extended warranty), and checked on Firmware updates.

Has not helped.

But it diminishes my thoughts of the car being the issue.

My guess is still the phone.

And either it being a batch of Bluetooth transmitter receivers or crap software.

Interestingly, if a person calls me, and the car initiates the communication to the phone, it seems to be stable.

When the phone initiates the communication to the car it fails 9/10.

The immediate sign is that the car stereo continues to play and doesn't mute the music/radio whilst dialling and connecting, despite the car and phone both clearly showing icons that BT connection is in place.

This says to me that the BT protocol coming from the phone is flawed.

I'm concerned it's the Bluetooth hardware still, as that's the sort of thing that no manufacturer would want to own up to and face massive product recall and replacement issues.

Meanwhile, I'm praying a software upgrades comes and fixes it.

Or I'm seeking a full refund against an iPhone 16 in September.

I’m experiencing the same issue on my brand new iPhone 15 Pro with 2 different vehicles, a 2011 BMW 528i and a 2011 BMW 335i. Both have iDrive navigation and factory bluetooth. Placing a call from car via the built-in interface (Telephone -> Phone Book, for example) results in one of 3 things happening. iOS 17.2.1.

Call is placed and connects, car shows an active call. After about 40 seconds the car looses connection from the iPhone, while the iPhone still shows as connected and sending audio to the BMW’s Bluetooth.

Call is placed and connects, car still shows as “dialing”. Completing the call using the end button in the interface has no effect. Ending the call on the iPhone does not update the car - still shows as an active call. After about 30 seconds the call ends on the car side, but the connection is lost on the car end - shows that the iPhone is connected but prompts to re-pair. The iPhone always shows as being connected.

Or: call is never placed, the car immediately disconnects from the iPhone while the iPhone shows as the car is connected.

The BMW Bluetooth module has been factory reset via the original BMW diagnostic software, and is running the latest software available from BMW.

Turning Bluetooth off and on (both car side and iPhone side) temporarily restores basic connection between the two devices.

This persists even after setting the device up as brand new, without signing into iCloud or restoring from a backup.

Has anyone received any communication from Apple? I’m going to the Genius Bar tomorrow, but if it’s not a hardware issue then I’ll assume it’s absolutely awful software from Apple. Which is deeply, truly disappointing. Thankfully I still have my 14 Pro (which works fine). This was meant to be part of a “free” upgrade on my carrier, but is proving to be a real pain.

Just got off the phone with Apple Support, who were extremely helpful and kind! Taking my 15 Pro in to the Genius Bar for diagnostics, but their intuition is that it’s a software bug. Given that it’s been 5 months since the phone has come out, though, I’m skeptical of Apple doing anything to resolve this issue, though. Will update if the Genius Bar finds something wrong and it’s fixed with new hardware.

Going to list here what works and doesn't work for me.

Handset: iPhone 15 Pro

Purchased: Oct 23

iOS: 17.2.1

Modem Firmware: 1.22.05

  1. iPhone XR - no connectivity issues
  2. iPhone 14 - no connectivity issues
  3. iPhone 15 - no connectivity issues
  4. iPhone 15 Pro
    • Phone disconnects from after 40 seconds during calls, reconnects after 10 seconds and maintains stable connection for the duration of the call.
    • Car telephone controls (console / steering wheel) lose functionality, display locks up.
    • Apps that disconnect after 40 seconds include: Phone, Siri, WhatApp
    • To be verified: Facetime calls - I have received a couple of Facetime calls as a test and they remained connected. Need to do some more tests, but wondering if Facetime, due to the video element, uses a different connection profile with the car rather than the expected Hands Free Profile. Need to test some more, just thinking aloud folks.

Key points for me are that (1) the 15 Pro always disconnects at 40 seconds into a call (I recognise others have differing timelines) and (2) the reconnection ALWAYS remains stable for current and future calls. In my configuration, the iPhone 15 Pro IS CAPABLE of maintaining a stable connection AFTER reconnection.

Updated to 17.3.1 recently and was having issues with the bluetooth in my car (2016 Ford Fiesta - iPhone 15 Pro Max). Deleted both from each other and now it won’t even discover the car over Bluetooth.

Tried with my girlfriend’s phone (15 Pro Max but not on 17.3.1) and it connected straight away, so as most assume it seems to be a software issue.

Oh man, I'm so glad to read this. I was super worried that it was something with the hardware. But now that I read this, I'll wait for an update. I was ready to send everything back to Apple and ask for my money back. I mean seriously: €1850 for a phone.

I just tested my iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 Pro in the car and they worked fine. They are running on iOS 17.0.0 though. That’s is also a great confirmation that it’s a software thing. I'm going to try to update the iPhone 12 Pro to iOS 17.0.3 and see if the problem starts occurring on that phone as well.

I also am losing connection with my cars factory radio/phone (non-CarPlay). Started as soon as I bought the 15 Pro Max. Actually I have been having a lot of issues with this phone. I believe it’s a software issue. Apple isn’t the same company it was 10 years ago. Progressively has been having issues with each and every new iOS release. I think enough with the “carbon neutral” and AppleTv shows and concentrate on putting out better and non-buggy software.
