Hello MikeMcF,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that a screen saver appeared when you were watching a show on your Apple TV. We are happy to help.
We recommend trying the steps here to see if you have an update: Update Apple TV software - Apple Support
"Check for updates
- Open Settings
on Apple TV. - Go to System > Software Updates and select Update Software.
- If an update is available, a message appears.
- Select Download and Install to start downloading.
- During the update process, don’t disconnect your Apple TV. The status light may flash slowly during the update process."
If no resolution after updating your Apple TV, we recommend using the steps here to reset your Apple TV: Reset Apple TV - Apple Support
"Reset Apple TV
- Open Settings
on Apple TV. - Go to System > Reset, then select Reset.
- Resetting Apple TV and restoring it to factory settings can take some time, so be patient. If Apple TVstill doesn’t respond, do one of the following:
- If you have an Apple TV 4K: Contact Apple TV Support.
- If you have an Apple TV HD and a Mac with macOS Catalina or later: Disconnect the power and HDMI cables from Apple TV. Connect one end of a USB-C cable (sold separately) to Apple TV and the other end to your computer. Open the Finder on your computer, select Apple TV in the sidebar, then select Restore. If that doesn’t work, contact Apple TV Support.
- If you have an Apple TV HD and a PC with iTunes or a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier:Disconnect the power and HDMI cables from Apple TV. Connect one end of a USB-C cable (sold separately) to Apple TV and the other end to your computer. Open iTunes on your computer, select Apple TV in the Source list, then select Restore. If that doesn’t work, contact Apple TV Support."
These steps may help. Please let us know if you have further questions.
Take care.
