To Charge the iPhone 15 Pro on a BMW Wireless charging pad or not ?

I recently received my iPhone 15 Pro Max and am quite satisfied with this device. I also have a 2020 BMW X3 M Competition that I drive daily. I did infrequently charge my iPhone 12 Pro Max on the wireless charging pad in the X3MC and I did notice the iPhone 12 Pro Max got quite warm. But, I typically used a cable for charging in the automobile so the iPhone would not move around in the console (during spirited drives).

But now that I have the iPhone 15 Pro Max and have heard the reports of the iPhone 15 Pro issues with the wireless charging pad in BMWs. Of course, I am concerned about charging my new iPhone 15 Pro Max in my X3MC and causing damage to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. As mentioned, I don’t’ use that option very often but if the charging need arises, I want to charge safely. Of course, I could use the cable, but what if I don’t have a cable and need to charge the iPhone. As such my question is: should I or should I not use the wireless charging pad in my X3MC to charge my iPhone 15 Pro Max ?

Thanks very much for the assistance.

Johnnie

Thanks for the response. I am quite perplexed by the lack of info and/or guidance from Apple or the automobile manufacturers. We have paid for a option/service we can’t safely use. Someone needs to step up and tell us what is the way ahead.

I’ve just updated to 17.1.1 which according to Apple fixes a bug that ‘In rare circumstances, Apple Pay and NFC features may become unavailable on iPhone 15 models after wireless charging in certain cars’. I haven’t used the wireless charger yet, but I am minded to try at the weekend - the update seems pretty specific on it & that sounds exactly like my issue, or am I being naive?

The ‘overheating’ issue is not limited to a BMW. It is such an issues, that the new Porsche Cayenne has a wireless charging pod that is actually cooled by directed air flow. Bravo Porsche! But it seems using inductive charging is an issue with all devices in all autos. It is probably an issue in most any inductive charging situation - such as with a MagSafe type charger.

When I got my iPhone 15 Pro MAX and these issues arose, I stopped using the charging pod in the auto. I use a nice USB-C cable or a Power Bank (such a the Anker Prime or a MagSafe portable from Apple web site).

Hope this helps you ease your concern and make a sound decision in an effort to alleviate (well let’s say ‘avoid”) this issue.

I had a 2021 BMW X5. The charge plate cooked my Samsung S8 battery in one day. The battery swelled up and delaminated the case. I put my replacement phone (Samsung S21) on the plate for 15 mins experimentally and the case got very hot. There is no way I would put my Iphone 15 pro max anywhere near it. BTW I sold the BMW. Top of the list of reasons was the charger plate, next on the list being the tail gate button which closed the gate on me every time my hip touched it while I was loading or unloading, then there was the track pointer immediately above the drink holder that randomly changed car mode or audio track every time I reached for my coffee. There were other reasons too, I would never buy another BMW.

I agree with lobsterghost1. The problem is that the lenses on the new iPhone 15 (and maybe the 14 also) stick out and prevent the phone from staying close enough to the charging pad to allow a good connection.

My Prius Prime has a slot for wireless charging of phones and it worked fine on my iPhone 8. The I got a new iPhone 15 Pro and it doesn't work. I spent a lot of time with AppleCare+, and here's their final statement:

Just wanted to send over the information our engineering team had gave us. The slot is too

small for the iPhone and the car to complete the “handshake” to charge. The camera lens seem to be preventing it from fully sliding into the charging port.

I'm now talking with my Toyota dealer about the problem, but I don't expect a fix anytime soon. So I'm just plugging the phone in (USB C) to charge it.
