i changed my password but i forgot what i changed it to so when i tried to erase my iphone it asked for the apple id of a gmail i never used before

How this can happen is if you purchased a previously owned iPhone, the owner didn't completely sign out of the iPhone with their Apple ID. If you are seeing a partial Apple ID email address that you do not recognize, you will need to reach out to the previous owner. See the two links below that go over Activation Lock, this is a security feature that only the owner of the Apple ID can remove.
