several issues after update to Sonoma 14.0

Ever since I updated my macbook air (chip Apple M2) to Sonoma 14.0 my laptop has issues and isn't working properly. My work flow has been slowed down and the system has ridiculous bugs:

  • preview per space key not working - when space key is pressed the file actually opens. cannot be fixed by relaunching the Finder.
  • an odd blue frame appears when moving cursor/mouse
  • when changing from, say, Windows to Chrome and back again the cursor jumps either right to the end of page or top of page in either applications???!!!
  • i have reinstalled and rebooted incl. deinstalling and reinstalling applications such as chrome, endnote, outlook etc.
  • i have shut down and launched in safe mode - problem occurs in either mode

With every update OS gets worse and worse. I was increadibly happy when I bought the airbook only a few months ago...now i am frustrated on a daily basis! bloody nuisance!!!

Sonoma has been an absolutely disaster. I have a 2019 intel mbp. Never had any issue. Worked perfectly until the Sonoma upgrade. Ever since, thunderport display wouldn’t work properly or would not charge from external display. Within 2 days the battery required service. Battery only had 80 cycles and it’s now shot. Went to the Apple Store, they won’t admit anything, of course, and was pretty much a waste of time. Couldn’t fix anything, find anything, nor acknowledge anything.

Told me it could also be the system board, etc etc. it’s either user error or luck. basically if your computer is out of warranty, you are screwed. Been a Mac user for a long time but their products are becoming increasingly unreliable. Thanks Apple! My last mba lasted 10 years; battery 8. Steve must be doing a 360.

HEY APPLE! You have an overabundance of unhappy customers - and these are just the ones that have joined this forum. Please, let us know if these problems are going to get fixed. None of us needs to upgrade to a brand new machine when ours are only a couple years old.

2022 Adobe photoshop is messed up.

When using search and finding the desired jpg or folder or application, the screen is jumpy.

I have had to restart my computer, an M1 MacBook Air, because the attached keyboard, mouse, and backup drives aren't working well. What a horrible waste of time!

I've been googling to no avail and finally found this thread. I guess I'm a little relieved I'm not alone? I have a 2021 MacBook and post update the time and date have been a mess. It's my work computer and I missed an entire meeting last week because of it. The clock issue finally resolved after 14.1 but now the computer won't sleep or stay off. I've always just shut the lid to sleep and it'll stay charged that way for a few days. I've had to charge it to turn on every morning since updating, and today I finally tried shutting down. The shut down happens, and then the computer immediately reboots. My battery is going to fry if I can't get the computer to ever shut off. I'm currently attempting to reinstall tho that doesn't seem to have helped anyone else.

After update to Sonoma, browser pages crash constantly, browser and other apps too. Spontaneous restarts with Kernel Panic messages. Trying to update the OS and you get "could not complete" message. Check your Internet connection but when you do it via command line you see that it is a hash mismatch. I cannot use an external HD for backups. Time Machine often does not launch and when it does it gets stuck backing up and fails so now I risk losing all the software I bought. And if you think Apple gives a ****, then you are more naive than me. Luckily I lease this machine so I'm sending it back. Such a shame to see Apple go down like this. I was an ardent fan of Macbooks. Now back to Linux.

I am in the same dilemma. Using Mac since 1997. Sonoma easily costing me a 1-2 hours of lost productivity a day on my 2019 MacBook Pro 16. Mail crashing so often it’s almost unusable. I hit send and wait for beach ball to stop spinning… then it freezes… then I force quit… report to Apple (nobody is listening but I do it anyway). Same with messages… how could they mess this up so badly

I finally gave up on making my Photoshop 2022 work with Sonoma 14.2.1. I downloaded Apple's Acorn 7 ($29.99 or something like that). There's a learning curve, but it's not awful, it's just not as nifty as my Photoshop was. But, a photo app that won't respond to many of the choices in the menu bar is not good.

Still holding out the dim hope that Apple and Adobe will play nice.

This update has been a disaster for me. My MacBook Pro is getting to the point it’s un-usable and causing me deep embarrassment on calls with colleagues and customers.

  • Bluetooth is constantly disconnecting various devices.
  • Sound is changing source constantly.
  • Apple peripherals won’t connect or stop working even though fully charged, ie. Trackpad, Keyboard, Headphones.
  • iCloud is not syncing across devices.
  • Screen settings resetting constantly.

Whats disturbing is that the number of updates is rapidly increasing to multiple per week, and the price of services is inflating 25% while my experience is dropping below acceptable levels.

I am literally thinking of changing to Windows after 30 years of Apple loyalty. What used to help me do my work better has turned into a data mining and attention grabbing tool for Apple staff to prove their metrics to their boss.

I am in the middle of a past due outline. I don't know what made me hit that button to upgrade the OS. This never goes well when done at a crucial point in the workflow. My issues are similar to some I've seen from others in this thread.

  1. I have seen the blue frame but didn't know what to make of it.
  2. The battery indicator does not show that it's charging when plugged in, but I found out by leaving it plugged in for a while that it is charging. It would still be nice to see the indicator.
  3. But, the worse thing happening (after a day or two with the new OS) is that when I try to log in it doesn't recognize my password. I thought maybe I picked up a virus and factory reset the computer, created a new password, and for a day or two things seemed okay, except that I still didn't figure out how to get my iCloud files back on the desktop. However, I went to log in using the new password this morning and it doesn't recognize the new password, so I'm back where I was on that.

This is why I used to just ignore the prompt to update to the new OS if things were going fine with the old one. I definitely can't afford to lose the time on projects. I'm glad I have other computers that I haven't updated, but this definitely decreases my mobility.

For those who reported having a new MacBook, I guess you've answered my question about whether a newer computer would respond better to the OS.

My thoughts exactly. I have been using Apple for so many years. Since the last update my Macbook Pro with M2 chip won’t power back on. Service centre said they had to replace logic board and touch ID. It was ok for a day. Then the day after it stopped working again. They did another service replacing battery and keyboard as preventative measures. Sadly two days later i am back to same issue. Not powering on. I’m hopeless.
