Number registered to Apple ID not associated with phone

Solution:

unregistered the number (settings/Messages)
moved to airplane mode and back
registered the number (settings/Messages)
this solved the FaceTime issue as well by itself. No need to repeat.

Restarting the iPhone, having the correct SIM inserted will also help:
