I’ve tried removing various apps and devices to no avail. Can anyone assist?

There's your problem.


The 5,1 is maxed out at Mojave even with the best graphics card.

Alternatives that allow it run higher operating systems are very unreliable and can lead to kernel panics and data loss, and are officially unsupported. If you want to run Big Sur or higher, follow these specs:

Big Sur a Migration tip - Apple Community


Keep in mind Mojave is the last OS to support 32 bit applications.


DV Warehouse and Otherworld computing are good places in my experience to buy older used and refuribhsed equipment.
