Turn off in-line predictive text but keep predictive suggestions.

New as of iOS 17 I have a new “feature” of predictive text appearing in line with what I’m typing, and blocking me from backspacing if I mistyped a letter. Worse, in text input fields that block me from exceeding a character limit, it traps me on that word that it wants to suggest.

I, too, was extremely annoyed by this issue and I think I figured it out. Settings > Accessibility. Under "Physical and Motor," choose "Switch Control." Under "Keyboard," toggle off "Extended Predictions." This seems to remove the in-line predictions yet still gives you the three word options/emojis under the text.

So, I’m not sure if this is because of the update, but a few days after using this solution, inline predictions returned to my keyboard. But now there’s a more obvious way to turn them off that I don’t think was there before.

Try going to Settings. Click General. Then Keyboards. Scroll to the bottom. In the second to last section under English there’s and option to toggle on/off “Show Predictions Inline.”

I have an iPhone 13 updated to 17.2.1.

I hope this helps!

I did both changes to Settings 1. go to Settings > General > Keyboard > under All Keyboards turn OFF Show Predictions Inline

I also did 2. Settings > Accessibility > Physical and Motor > Switch Control (I have it off) > Keyboard: Turn OFF Extended Predictions

This worked for me. I still have suggestions showing above the keyboard. But the back arrow inline to change a word is gone.

Thank you! Confirmed this works.

I remember looking for a way to disable this anti-feature when iOS17 first came out, since it routinely would scramble things as I was typing. Sometimes I want to be informal and intentionally write words like “w/“ and “def” and it’d scramble them to “with/“ and “definitely”.

The worst was when the inline prediction would literally disable the left/right arrow keys; no skipping around in case it happened to have a prediction at the time. So glad they added the ability to disable this because it was a garbage fire from UI/UX at least from my perspective (and those who have a strong preference not to have interference while they’re typing).

‘bchuras’ Thank you so much!!!

Your suggested change in Accessibility fixed this problem I had experienced.

If I mark an existing word in notepad or while texting, et al;  I intend to copy it, and I don’t need any suggestions about a similar word. If I accidentally touch the suggestion (just hovering above the marked word) it would replace the stored word and that is dangerous —  especially if you don’t notice what you did.

”on my ipad pro, when I mark a piece of text for copying, it offers a corrected (different word) version, how can I turn off this dangerous feature?”

thnx!!!

Hi FalconicKatadora,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're referring to inline text predictions. This is an iOS 17 feature that can be disabled by turning off predictive text. The following sections of Use predictive text on iPhone have further details.

"Apply inline text predictions

As you type, predictions that complete the word or phrase you’re typing appear inline in gray text. Tap the Space bar to accept the prediction for the word or phrase; keep typing to reject it.

If you accept an inline prediction and then change your mind, tap, then tap the word you were in the process of typing.

Note: Inline predictive text may not be supported in your language. See iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability."

"Turn off predictive text

  1. While using the keyboard, touch and hold the Next Keyboard, Emoji key or the Switch Keyboard key.
  2. Tap Keyboard Settings, then turn off Predictive.

When you turn off Predictive, iPhone may still try to suggest corrections for misspelled words. To accept a correction, enter a space or punctuation, or tap Return. To reject a correction, tap the “x.” If you reject the same suggestion a few times, iPhone stops suggesting it."

Take care.

No the answer to their question was not provided. Everyone wants to know how to turn off the in-line predictive text but KEEP the suggest text boxes. The in-line predictive text is basically autocorrect and should be disabled when i disable auto-correct but unfortunately i have to disable a feature I actually liked in order to get rid on the "in-line predictive text" aka the unwanted autocorrect that no one asked for.
