Turn off in-line predictive text but keep predictive suggestions.

bchuras, I have never created a post on this website, nor did I ever expect to, but I need to reply with the biggest, most meaningful "THANK YOU!!" I've ever felt like giving. This by far is the most annoying Apple feature that's come to play, and not knowing how to turn it off but keep the 3 recommendations was quite literally driving me insane. I'd give you a gift card if I knew you in person. Thank you so much

bchuras' "solution" doesn't really fix the problem. It just makes it seem to happen less as it reduces the length of the inline predictions. It will still inline-suggest shorter words so it makes it slightly less frustrating to go back and delete less characters but we shouldn't let this be the solution.

This only works for the new iphone. The 10R does not give the options; we can only turn it all off or tolerate the inline predictive text suggestions.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're referring to inline text predictions. This is an iOS 17 feature that can be disabled by turning off predictive text. The following sections of Use predictive text on iPhone have further details.

"Apply inline text predictions

As you type, predictions that complete the word or phrase you’re typing appear inline in gray text. Tap the Space bar to accept the prediction for the word or phrase; keep typing to reject it.

If you accept an inline prediction and then change your mind, tap, then tap the word you were in the process of typing.

Note: Inline predictive text may not be supported in your language. See iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability."

"Turn off predictive text

1. While using the keyboard, touch and hold  or .
2. Tap Keyboard Settings, then turn off Predictive.

When you turn off Predictive, iPhone may still try to suggest corrections for misspelled words. To accept a correction, enter a space or punctuation, or tap Return. To reject a correction, tap the “x.” If you reject the same suggestion a few times, iPhone stops suggesting it."

here’s my issue:

1. i have predictive text off. but sometimes it will still pop up with the grey bar above my keyboard and give me suggestions. how do i turn that off?
2. as for autocorrect, i have that on because i type too fast and misspell things sometimes. however, when i’m typing something that i want to type and it suggests something incorrect and i click the “x” to deny the correction, when i hit space it corrects the word anyway, even though i hit the “x”. i can’t afford to turn autocorrect off, i rely on it, but how do i stop it from correcting words i don’t want corrected?

Just search keyboard in settings. Hit the highlighted one. Accessibility-Switch Controls. Scroll down and turn off extended predictions.

I just allowed the new update on my 10R and have tried this 'solution' several times. It does not work.

In the new update this doesn't seem to work. It doesn't disable the inline predictions. God, this is so frustrating. I'm on version 17.2.1

Figured this out.

Turn General->Keyboards->Show Predictions Inline OFF.

Such an annoying “feature”!

(Tested on iPhone 15 Pro)

Are you on iOS 17.2? If so, into Settings > General > Keyboards and disable the “Show Predictions Inline” toggle switch. That disable it.
