New as of iOS 17 I have a new “feature” of predictive text appearing in line with what I’m typing, and blocking me from backspacing if I mistyped a letter. Worse, in text input fields that block me from exceeding a character limit, it traps me on that word that it wants to suggest.

I, too, was extremely annoyed by this issue and I think I figured it out. Settings > Accessibility. Under "Physical and Motor," choose "Switch Control." Under "Keyboard," toggle off "Extended Predictions." This seems to remove the in-line predictions yet still gives you the three word options/emojis under the text.
The problem is, if I turn off predictive it turns off all predictive features. I want the keyboard suggested words/emojis, but I don’t want the in-line ones that force autocomplete. The new feature should not be attached to an existing feature that we wanted to keep.

The issue with this new feature is that if I am finished with my word, and I want to continue my sentence, I click space and the phone automatically accepts this longer word that I was never going to type out. For example, I wanted to type “my brain hurts from the cold that luke gave me” and my phone changed “luke” into “lukewarm.” I don’t have autocorrect on. I want the text options to appear like they used to without changing what I’m typing.
I am having the same issue. I want to keep the suggested text but want to get rid of the inline predicted text. I HATE autocorrect and this is worse because now in order to get rid of it i have to disable a feature that I actually want just to get rid of the stupid new "update".
The “Community Specialist” response is not helpful.
We want to COMPLETELY DISABLE the predictive and correction suggestions that pop up on the typing line while typing, but NOT the suggestions that pop up above the keyboard.
I saw something online about the next ios update, 17.2, having a separate option to turn off just the inline predictions without turning off the word suggestions in the grey bar above the keyboard, so hopefully that is true.
We cannot use the backspace button while the inline predictive text is predicting text. If you mis-spell a word, it makes you select the wrong word first, and THEN erase it. This doesn’t work when the predicted work is beyond the character limit of the text field we are typing in, you just get stuck with a typo.
I think update 17.3.1 solves this.
Edit: It’s not as aggressive as before but still there. Also letting everybody know that “show inline ..” option is not going to appear if the keyboard is in another language BUT WILL STILL REPLACE TEXT IN ENGLISH. doesnt make any sense!!!!!

Just search keyboard in settings. Hit the highlighted one. Accessibility-Switch Controls. Scroll down and turn off extended predictions.
Unfortunately didn't work for me :/ I thought it did for a min but it went right back to autocorrecting stuff. Apple really needs to get their **** together. Predictive text is not and should mot be the same thing as autocorrect because i NEVER like autocorrect and will never use it and now I cant even have the predictive text feature that I actually liked.
I am having the same problem. I HATE the inline predictive text, but I want to keep the regular three word suggestions at the top of the keyboard. I just updated my iOS this morning and it’s been driving me crazy and slowing down all of my texts because I have to keep going back and correcting things. Apple needs to have an options to turn just the inline texts off. I came here hoping for a solution, but the answer they provided does not help.
I thought bchuras's answer worked, but it was fleeting. The inline predictive text definitely needs to be separated from the predictive keyboard. I also hate the grammar corrections (blue underlines) that are almost always incorrect.
I just realized why I hate this so much. You know when you're having a conversation with someone and they keep trying to finish your words? That's what this is! Whether it's correct or not is not the point. It's super distracting and annoying.
Turn off in-line predictive text but keep predictive suggestions.
