Apple lightning dock not working with Apple USB 3 camera adapter

Hello, I’m experiencing an issue trying to play music from my wife’s iPhone 13 and my iPhone 13 mini using an Apple lightning dock connected to an Apple USB 3 camera adapter. We have used this setup for about 3 years now and it had always worked great. Many people use the camera adapter to pass music from their IOS device via USB to an off board DAC. We do the same, but we added the Apple lightning dock so the device is vertical instead of sitting flat.

Until recently, it all worked great, and it still works flawless with our iPod touch that runs on IOS 15, but on our phones (IOS 16.6.1 and 17.0.3 respectively) we get an “accessory not supported - This accessory is not supported by this device” and no music passes to the DAC and the phones won’t even charge. If the USB camera adapter is plugged directly into either phone, the phone will charge and music will transfer to the DAC without issue. If the Apple lightning dock is used without the camera adapter, the phone will charge as normal.

***BUT***, before someone suggests that maybe the lightning dock is no longer supported by Apple, or that maybe something changed with the DAC we use, the really weird part is if either phone is powered off and then placed on the dock while off, the phones will power on, there will be no error message, the phones charge just fine, and the music will pass to the DAC without any issues. However, as soon as the phone is taken off the dock and then put back on, the error message comes back and nothing works. I’ve been able to replicate this multiple times with both phones.

I’m thinking this could be  related to the issues that surfaced with the USB camera adapter when IOS 16.5 was rolled out. Apparently the camera adapter stoped working with 16.5 but Apple was able to correct the issue with the next update. Anyone have an idea of why this is occurring? Is there an easy way to notify Apple of this potential glitch?

Hello productof78,

This page can help out with providing available steps to try for the error being received: If an 'Accessory may not be supported alert' appears on your Apple device - Apple Support

Update to the latest version of iOS
Some accessories might require the latest version of iOS. Make sure that you update to the latest version of iOS.

Make sure the accessory is compatible
If this is the first time that you tried to use the accessory, make sure that it works with your device. Some accessories only work with certain models of iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. If you aren’t sure, contact the manufacturer.

Check the connections
Disconnect and reconnect the accessory to clear the alert. If the alert continues to appear, check the connectors on the accessory and your device for damage or debris. If necessary, gently remove the debris and clean the connectors on your device.

Learn more
If this alert appears and you don’t have any accessories connected, contact Apple Support.
Learn what to do if your device won’t charge.

To help further isolate things down you may see if the error still comes up with a different accessory connected to the adapter, if possible.

Cheers.

Thank you for the advice but none of that is applicable. As you will notice in my post, one of the two iPhones is on the most current IOS version, anll accessories are Apple products, and I mentioned trying connecting the devices in multiple ways. I’m also using two different phones on different IOS updates and an iPod touch.

What I need is a way to notify Apple that there is a problem with the compatibility of the dock and camera adapter when connected to IOS 16 and 17 devices iPhones. As I mentioned, this setup worked fine for more than two years. During that time it was used with an iPhone 8, and iPhone XR. Furthermore, it continues to work great to this day with an iPod touch running IOS 15.

Any advice on what steps to take to make Apple aware of this glitch would be very helpful.

Thanks
