Macbook Air crashes and reboots itself when sending HDMI video

Since this last update to Sonoma my Macbook crashes and reboots itself. I plug and adaptor to put some videos into a projector, for my students to watch, and it suddenly crashes. It has happened 3 times today! I cannot work like this.

I've tried a couple of adaptors and I have the same problem. I never had this issue before Sonoma.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 14.0

Mac Charging:

Assuming you taking about a surge protector, then it seems you may have too good of one. So, downgrade to one of lesser wattage...

Troubleshooting Mac Charge:

Refer to the following....

A. Reset the SMC and your NVRAM:

(Applies to Intel-Based Macs Only): Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. Updates), system configurations (i.e. for Power) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM. Try performing each thrice. It may take sometime, being certain you have the time to perform these resets.

B. Try a New Charger:

C. A Few Links to Refer to for Power:

"No, it's not that. It's Sonoma. I've been using MacBooks and HDMI adaptors for more than 10 years. This never happened before, and it started right when I updated to Sonoma."

Downgrade from Sonoma:

Seems you know what you're doing with the macOS. So, did you create a Time Machine Backup of your Mac, prior to the upgrade. If so, restore your Mac from it. I would also recommend that you reinstall the macOS.

Provide Apple Feedback:

Q1. It is sonoma I had to use aircast on the firestick. I know it’s extra & out the way but it’s the only way until Apple recognizes our complaints & updates the problem.

A1. Report this to Apple, as I mentioned here: Mac OS Sonoma problems - Apple Community

Compatibility and Proprietary:

Q2. They supposedly had an update 2-3 weeks ago but clearly hasn’t fixed the bug. This is also a tactic they do so you can purchase a newer model

A2. Apple provides updates for their MacOS versions for 7 years and then discontinues them. Microsoft does the same thing with their operating systems, but the computers are created by manufacturers of their own. Point being: Apple is proprietary and they want everyone to be kept up-to-date. My 2018 Intel Mac will stop being compatible with macOS releases soon enough, but I’ll keep using it. Why? Because it has an Intel processor, which I use for Intel-based software and older Virtual Machines using VMWare Fusion.

"This answer is not a 'Best reply', it's almost not related to the topic. An AI answer for sure.: As a follow up, I had to stop using the HDMI and do something else because this problem was disrupting my job. This is the kind of solution one would use for a Windows computer, not for a Mac, isn't it?"

Cable Causing Issues:

Those links contain troubleshooting methods that are and are not particular to Macs So, aside from Mac troubleshooting, here are some ideas from a more general perspective. So, try some other cable. Reasons why a cable would cause this...

  • The cable could be wired incorrectly
  • It could be some cheep cable
  • A fault made in the wire during manufacturing
  • Too much ohmage or resistance, making too much drain on the computer itself
  • A power spur or surge during use

So, go Apple-for-Apple, and most certainly use a surge protector.

To Clarify:

Q1. "Besides, what 'wires' and 'cables' are you referring to?"

A1: You said: "I plug and adaptor to put some videos into a projector"
