Filter failed hp printer

I have an odd problem. When printing invoices, packing list and other things, some printings fail with a "filter failed"-message. Out of 50 invoices some 2-6 invoices get this problem, the rest comes out just fine. And it looks very random, can't figure out a specific problem, like too many rows or failed font etc.. Most come out perfect, so printing works, mostly. And when I click on try again on those who stucked, they print with no problem.

Have updated both filemaker and os X through the latest versions. Cleared printer settings several times and updated firmware in printer (hp 612m) and so on. Nothing changes. The printing works fine, except for those odd ones that get stucked.

Attached is error logs from both os x and HP printer utility (as additional text).

Thank you! I have found another thread here where some other app crashes with the same forbidden memory area result, not hp-related. The solution was to erase the hard drive and install OS X again with no encryption at all. Do you think that's worth a shot?

No, that won't help for a Segmentation Fault which is what was reported in your crash log. Filevault does not interfere with the normal operation of macOS so turning it off would make no difference.

The document prints well with another app, and also with the original app, when you try again, that's so strange.

If you can successfully print the document the second time, then what is different from the first time? Did you print multiple documents the first time maybe and only this single document the next time? Sometimes what is printed immediately before can make a difference especially if there is a bug in the software or the driver.

This is just one of many reasons why I stopped recommending HP printers over ten years ago.

The "Segmentation Fault" in the crash report means the "hpPostProcessing" process crashed because it attempted to write to a protected memory area.

This only adds information to helpful replies you already received. Only HP can fix their software... and they won't be interested. HP has never been serious about supporting the Mac platform. To them we are a niche, oddball market not worth supporting. That's why I gave up on them ages ago.

yes, most of the time its like 1-3 invoices in the middle of maybe 50. and then I press retry on them in the printer window it comes out fine.

we also have one more iMac from the same year with the same driver printing with the same client software, and on that one the problem shows around 1 time/month, whereas the other one is daily.

HP printer drivers and printer firmware have had issues for years for compatibility issues with various documents. In fact using a certain font could trigger a failure which could lock the printer requiring a hard power cycle. Make sure the HP drivers are up to date or use different drivers as suggested by @BDAqua. If this printer supports AirPrint, then try re-adding the printer using the AirPrint driver.

FYI, HP only has one Mac support specialist so it is unlikely you will get much assistance from HP support (at least 10 years ago anyway since we have stopped using HP printers for various reasons), but HP never seemed interested in any information I ever had regarding finding a new bug.

You may have more luck examining the difference between the two jobs/documents including whether the document which errored can be printed by itself. One of the print failures we had years ago did not involve the data within the document, but the meta data associated with the document.

You could try using another app to print the troublesome document. You can always try saving the document as a .pdf, then using Preview or some other PDF viewer to try printing the resulting document to see if it makes a difference. We had to do this a lot years ago, each app may handle the processing of the document slightly different so that the driver & printer are happy.

Good luck.
