I am trying to upgrade the OS on my macbook pro from Sierra 10.12.6 to Mojave 10.14 but am having the hardest time. When trying to download from the Apple store it says the download link is broken and so I cannot update?? why is this so difficult. How do I install the update?

yes, that is exactly what I am suggesting, because 10.13 High Sierra will be more willing to adjust the boot drive format automatically.
There is no "wrong" way. Every Avenue is at least 'does no harm'.
So I just tried to install the update from Sierra to High Sierra 10.13.6 from the Apple Store page and it also says that version of the install is damaged and cannot be used!? why does Apple have damaged update installers on their Apple Store?
It worked! I've got High Sierra installed and perhaps I'll try Mojave now that I know i need to remove the installer from the apps and restart before installing. I saw Mojave in there as well. This community support group is great, you each got me closer and closer to a solution. Thank you all 100 times!

Interesting, why is that in my applications folder and why would i get rid of that rather than using it? just curious before trying what you've suggested. thanks!

Maybe its best to drag it to the trash and restart like you said before?
