I am trying to upgrade the OS on my macbook pro from Sierra 10.12.6 to Mojave 10.14 but am having the hardest time. When trying to download from the Apple store it says the download link is broken and so I cannot update?? why is this so difficult. How do I install the update?

The OP wants to upgrade from Sierra to Mojave.
The Combo Updater 10.14.4 will not work in this case. The Combo Updater only works if Mojave 10.14 is already installed.

is your date and time correct within five minutes?
you can not make a secure connection if date&time is off by more than five minutes.
Interesting, why is that in my applications folder and why would i get rid of that rather than using it? just curious before trying what you've suggested. thanks!

if your date&time are indeed correct, that is one more thing OFF the list of what could be interfering with your ability to get usable downloads.
Maybe its best to drag it to the trash and restart like you said before?
