Is there any setting I can change on my iPad to prevent one tap from selecting an entire word?

Unfortunately this fix doesn't seem to last. The issue will reappear even though the "Delete slide-to-type by word" toggle remains off. I found that cycling the toggle (on then off again) fixes the behavior for some amount of time before it returns. Just embarrassing having such terrible bugs in the "most advanced blah blah blah" operating system from a company of geniuses that seems to be only good at marketing... (The whole experience of being an Apple user is increasingly embarrassing on a daily basis.)

It's quite possible that lots of people did ask for such a feature. It can sometimes be difficult to remember that not everyone has the same needs or preferences.

Also, hold down for a moment when you tap end of word.

Turning off slide-to-type does NOT resolve this issue. The issue is unresolved still, two years after this started

Thanks for clarifying this. Seems that option is poorly named since it affects both cursor placement and deletion of the most recently swipe-to-typed word. I wish Apple would hold off on the next 10 gimmicks no one asked for or wants and instead improved on the last 50 poorly implemented features, and then moving forward they could measure twice and cut once maybe…

^^^ 100% agree with ninjadude9! @Apple - Fix the known issues with iOS (we all could offer a few suggestions) and then once those are fixed, devote resources to develop the gimmicks no one is asking for.

Nope, didn’t change anything for me… still selecting words instead of dropping cursor before/after. First iPhone, this and other little recent niggles are really making me want to go back to Android. Such a disappointment.

100%. Stop changing things that work fine. I feel like half of the new features are simply the result of “busy work”. Lay people off if there’s nothing for them to do besides reinvent the wheel. It seems like every update there’s a worse version of a previously working function. The business comes first. Always. It has to if it is to do the most good, for the most people, for the longest amount of time possible.

Hang in there. It wasn’t always like this. I noticed Apple going down hill a while ago and opted for Samsung. Apple is not as solid as it once was, but they are pretty responsive to fixing issues. Once they accept that the issue is not user error, of course.
