Is there any setting I can change on my iPad to prevent one tap from selecting an entire word?

After upgrading to iOS 17.0.3, tapping once in any kind of message (email, messages, this text box, etc.) now selects the entire word where you tapped. Previously, it would just drop the cursor at either the front or end of the word. It now takes me 3x longer to send any messages because I have to tap-and-hold to the appropriate spot anytime I want to edit or add something new, where before it was just tap and type. I send most emails and quick messages on my iPad because it has been easier than my laptop, but if it can’t be rectified, this will probably be my last iPad. Sounds like an insignificant change, I know, but it is absolutely killing my productivity. Please, does anyone know of any setting that can get this back to the way it was?

Thank god I’m not the only one.

THIS IS SOO IRRITATING !!

It’s not just Mail, it’s the whole text input. Even to write this comment. It happens ALL THE TIME !!!

People change phone for less than this.

This is really annoying me to the point that I am seriously considering switching back to Android soon (because of this and being unable to stream Apple Music at high resolution). But mostly this as I type a lot on my phone and it is unbelievably frustrating.

Ah, also not being able to place the cursor in the middle of a word when you just need to change/correct a letter.

Sort it out Apple!

Already sorted.

Simply touch the screen near to where you wish to edit text that you have input. Then, place your finger on the spacebar of the onscreen keyboard; hold until the keyboard switches to all-grey; your on-screen keyboard is now a trackpad.

Without lifting your finger from the screen, simply slide your finger (while watching the on-screen cursor) to the position the cursor where you want it to be - and lift your finger.

I'm sorry, I understand you because I was the reason, I hope if you notice when that happens, it's feedback, you can consult with your developer for a new update because The behavior of my iOS program has gone down...just advise because they know that because it's really difficult to update suddenly, not all updates will be perfect because that's what's being kept when updating due to viruses coming in, please keep using feedback, thank you very Yes, but everything should be in order because of the data that is kept that cannot be changed quickly, so everything will change, it can be seen that it is stable every update, so they also had a hard time with I'm sorry for the delay, you're not the only one, so it's hard to change what's stated because of the change of time, it's boring, so it's always the same, so just be patient That's all right because of the new modern ones that came out, so it's just trying to be new and exciting development for us too.

I understand how frustrating this change in behavior can be for your productivity. Unfortunately, there isn't a specific setting on iOS that allows you to revert to the previous behavior of tapping once to drop the cursor at the front or end of a word. Apple sometimes makes changes to its user interface and features with software updates, and these changes can affect how users interact with their devices.

However, you can try a workaround by adjusting the text selection settings in the Accessibility settings of your iPad. Here's how:

1. Go to Settings on your iPad.

2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.

3. Tap on Touch.

4. Toggle off the switch for "Tap to Hold to Select Text."

Disabling this setting may prevent the automatic selection of entire words when tapping once, but it might also affect other aspects of text selection and interaction.

Additionally, you can provide feedback to Apple about this change through the Feedback app or Apple's website. They may consider user feedback when making future updates to iOS.

I hope this helps alleviate some of the frustration you're experiencing.

Ok Ok ma'am, I'm just clarifying that we have it because I'm going through the same thing, I hope it's just a little patience, it's easy, just turn it off, it's not auto correction, it'll be fine I hope everything is fine, please excuse me because of the change because the other apps are not all working yet because of the update, just give it a little time everything will be fine thank you very much..

100%. Stop changing things that work fine. I feel like half of the new features are simply the result of “busy work”. Lay people off if there’s nothing for them to do besides reinvent the wheel. It seems like every update there’s a worse version of a previously working function. The business comes first. Always. It has to if it is to do the most good, for the most people, for the longest amount of time possible.

Is there any setting I can change on my iPad to prevent one tap from selecting an entire word?
