Is there any setting I can change on my iPad to prevent one tap from selecting an entire word?

After upgrading to iOS 17.0.3, tapping once in any kind of message (email, messages, this text box, etc.) now selects the entire word where you tapped. Previously, it would just drop the cursor at either the front or end of the word. It now takes me 3x longer to send any messages because I have to tap-and-hold to the appropriate spot anytime I want to edit or add something new, where before it was just tap and type. I send most emails and quick messages on my iPad because it has been easier than my laptop, but if it can’t be rectified, this will probably be my last iPad. Sounds like an insignificant change, I know, but it is absolutely killing my productivity. Please, does anyone know of any setting that can get this back to the way it was?

Thank god I’m not the only one.

THIS IS SOO IRRITATING !!

It’s not just Mail, it’s the whole text input. Even to write this comment. It happens ALL THE TIME !!!

People change phone for less than this.

Hey here’s how it worked for me

when I disabled the slide to type even my swipe/slide feature was disabled , so I only disabled the delete slide to type by word and kept the slide to type option enabled, now I am able to swipe/slide as well as prevent it from selecting some other word and instead the cursor moves to the start/end of the word we tap on when another word has already been selected.

good luck

Pahahaha sorry but that’s NOT a solution, that’s a convoluted workaround.

It's not a "convoluted workaround"; it's the way Apple designed it to work. You may not like it but it is nonetheless true. However, I can say that once you get used to it, it's great.

On Android you can just place the cursor wherever you want with one tap. Why can’t Apple do it? They just like to be difficult, that’s what it is.

It may have escaped your notice but an iPad doesn't use the Android operating system and therefore, will not work in exactly the same ways. Apple makes different choice than Google. If those choices don't work for you and you prefer the way it works on the Android, perhaps you should consider selling your iPad and using the proceeds toward an Android-based tablet.
