Wireless Carplay issues 2022 GMC Sierra

I have used wireless carplay in this vehicle successfully since Jan 2023. In the last 3 weeks I have had intermittent issue connecting to wireless carplay when starting the vehicle. I am not sure if this began before the iOS 17 release or not, but i did notice it started once my vehicle had an electronic update. If I stop the vehicle and turn the engine off and restart it connect almost every time. I have tried to document the current state of vehicle and phone when it does not connect and I cannot find any pattern that can be replicated.

Please don't state the obvious, "are you connected, is siri on, etc". I have read through multiple forums and standard apple support. I am looking for ways to diagnose and isolate the issue and was hoping someone on this forum may have similar issues or has found a fix.

My work around was similar, I would go to carplay and the phone doesn't show up, so I hit connect and it asks if I want to switch phone (eventhough my phone doesn't show up) I hit yes, then it tell me to connect to bluetooth, I hit cancel and now my phone shows up in carplay and connects.

This last week I noticed that my sons phone showed up in carplay and seemed to connect each time while my phone still did the thing. The one thing I noticed is he started the whole process with a cable. So I deleted all connections and started a new connection via the cable (it will ask about wireless as well) and once I connected that way, I have not had an issue connecting wirelessly (fingers crossed). Hoping this lasts.

Jumping in on this as I found this thread after I started having issues that matched exactly what is described by OP and others here… 2023 GMC Sierra with the new Google integrated infotainment system. I carry 2 phones. iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13. No problems connecting to either or switching between them since I bought the truck in December. Then I made the mistake of making the iPhone 14 a Trusted Device. Seemed ok for a while, but then started having trouble to connect. I believe the problem started after I blocked the phone from auto connecting to the trucks hotspot. I found that if I let it connect to the hotspot, it connected without issue. Another user mentioned this as well. Interesting clue since use of the hotspot is not a requirement for wireless CarPlay. I followed a combination of recommendations all found in this thread and have returned to normal successful connection every time. I removed the phone from trusted devices and “forgot” the phone at the truck. Also “forgot” the gmc hotspot on the phone and “forgot” the gmc Bluetooth connection. I then reset the infotainment system following GMC procedure by holding the phone hangup button on the steering wheel for 10 seconds. Also reset network settings on the phone at some point but I don’t think that was impactful. After all this, phone connects every time. Sorry for the long post but felt it was worth the explanation and steps I went through for recovery. Hopefully it helps others….

finally after going to GMC for the 2nd time and doing the software update for the 2nd time (I went 2 weeks ago) the CarPlay works consistently now. However, for me, the trick is to disconnect my iPhone 14 Pro from any WiFi before going inside the vehicle. It seems that there is no good handover from another WiFi to the gmc WiFi. If I don’t disconnect first from another WiFi , the CarPlay will not work.

I did find the solution to the problem. You can pair and re-pair all day and you will still have the problem. What you have to do is to go into your vehicle’s settings on the infotainment system and reset them back to default. After that, connect to the vehicle’s Bluetooth and start the pairing process as normal. Once I did that, I have not had the issue come up again.

I have a 2023 GMC Sierra Ultimate and had an issue where all of a sudden wireless CarPlay will not connect. My issue was that I just got a Mac Air and connected it to the GMC WiFi. The known network was then automatically added to my iPhone 14 Pro. I did not want my iPhone to connect to the GMC WiFi so I set it as do not automatically connect to the GMC WiFi on the iPhone. While trying to figure out why my CarPlay is as not connecting wirelessly I finally tried joining the GMC WiFi and bam. The wireless CarPlay connected. I then forgot the GMC WiFi on the iPhone and wireless CarPlay works fine again.

If you had it paired and working fine previously, reset your communication settings back to default in the GMC Infotainment unit. Then connect your phone to the GMC Bluetooth and pair again from the truck’s connection menu. It will detect you have an iPhone and ask if you want to set up CarPlay. Tap Yes and follow the prompts about sharing data with the truck, etc.

I have the exact same situation in my 2023 GMC Sierra Denali. For the times when my iPhone 14 will not connect, I have found that going to Settings->General->Carplay->(Name of your vehicle->(Toggle CarPlay Off and On) will make the phone connect to CarPlay instantly.

Did you ever find a solution? I prefer to not have to go through those steps each time it does not connect.

The only workaround I have found is if you are connected to the trucks built-in Wi-Fi. You must also make sure after you’re connected to go into settings on your iPhone, click on Wi-Fi, click on the little information icon beside the network name of your truck, and then click auto join. I find it very crazy that you have to be connected to the Wi-Fi in order to use CarPlay. It has not always been this way, but if you’re having issues, this is definitely a workaround

So I have been told that the issue lies in the more recent iPhone 15 maybe the 14 as well. Here were a couple thing in phone settting that have also helped

settings

screen time

content and privacy restriction

Make sure content and privacy is turned on

this so far has been the fix

secondly there is a program update via dealership

also make sure car play is turned on under allowed apps

good luck so far so good for me

Hi phawryluk,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

With CarPlay not working properly while using wirelessly, start by checking whether there is a recent compatible car firmware update from your car's manufacturer.

1. Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:
* If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
* If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on your iPhone under Settings > Bluetooth. Then go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on.
4. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display and select it.
5. Restart your iPhone and your car.
6. Make sure that Siri is on.
7. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is on, tap Allowed Apps, and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.
8. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.
9. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.

I have iPhone 14 Pro. I tried suggested content privacy setting, and I did the $195 dealer program update. Still no luck :( it works like a charm on first start up. Then I go to a store, return 10 mins later and it won’t work at all, until the next morning first try again. If I remove the cable from the car battery to reset the vehicle, it works also on the first try only. Seems like some sort of an electrical glitch.
