Pocket activation of podcasts is very frequent. All it takes is an accidental touch of the power button while the phone is pocketed.
Lock screen customization doesn't allow this to be altered or perhaps I'm missing it.
Is there a way to block this 'feature' ?

Thank you for clarifying. It sounds like the display is registering touching the screen in your pocket.
Have you considered turning your display away from your body, or if already is, try turning the other way, while putting it in your pocket?
Also, since there isn't a way to remove the "Now Playing" from the Lock screen, you can provide feedback regarding this by going to Feedback - Apple Podcasts - Apple

Thank you, that helps to clarify my query ... the pocket activations occur mostly when I've paused the podcast for a few minutes and the phone is safely in my pocket. An accidental touch of the power button activates the screen and then almost any touch of the screen does something to the podcast (start, skip etc).
I'm looking for a way to stop the podcast control appearing on the lock screen.
