Apple Pay/Wallet pops up and covers screen when trying to scan other document

How can I disable Apple Pay / Wallet from coming up on the screen when I am trying to scan a bar code or QR code boarding pass on my phone at the airport? Many airlines don’t have the ability to add their boarding pass to the Apple Wallet so we need to be able to scan the pass in an email, the airline’s app, or a screenshot in my photos.

Whenever I try to scan that document, Apple Wallet automatically pops up, covering the screen with the credit card prompt, making it impossible to scan the desired document and holding up lines at the airport.

I found dozens of threads on this issue going back 9 years on the Apple Support forums, with no solution provided by Apple. Anyone ever figure this out? Yes, my iPhone is updated to latest iOS.

There is a trick to circumvent the problem (which I used in your exact situation at a French train station). You can bring your phone close to the reader (keep it face up so you can see the screen) which will trigger Apple Wallet to show up. Now while keeping the phone close to the reader, close the Wallet app to display your train ticket and turn the phone around so the scanner can see your ticket.

It turns out that as long as you stay in range of the NFC reader Wallet won’t reappear automatically. It’s still annoying that we have to use such a trick, but it works pretty well at least.

Hello,

I don’t know if I can share links but I found an app that lets you add any QR code to wallet.

i just tried it adding my train pass and i could manually add it there, now I just have to try it once i get to the train station.

just put generic as the type when adding it.

the app is called pass2u wallet.

hope this helps.

You’re missing the problem. The sensor on a train station check in for example triggers automatically the Apple wallet, which would not be a problem if everybody in the world subscribed to the Apple wallet which they do not. Many companies throughout the world use a barcode ID tag in a PDF or email and that is how you enter a train or a bus. I need to disable nfc on iphone 15 pro. This problem is negatively impacting my current family travels.

So, NFC and RFID are two different technologies. The US doesn’t use RFID. When you get close enough the device probably uses NFC and it activates the NFC circuitry. NFC is proximity activated and will pop up when within a few inches. RFID activates from a much greater distance. If you switch to make it so double-click is required to pop up the Wallet, that should resolve your issue.

Are you sure it’s RFID activated? RFID is more common in Europe and other regions.

The real issue is the app developer or the lack of using an app that displays the QR code. We can’t fix that, nor can Apple. The app developer can code the app so the Wallet doesn’t pop up. So, that’s not going to resolve your current challenges.

I’ve not personally tried this, but there are posts across social media that indicate using Guided Access may resolve this the issue. You may need to contact Apple Support in your country/region for help setting it up. I’ve linked below an Apple Support article on setting up Guided Access.

It Sounds like a setting is not set correctly or has inadvertently been misadjusted. Please follow this path,

iPhone > Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > scroll down to Double-Click Side Button > please swipe left to right. If it is right (green) swipe left and the swipe right.

This should resolve your issue. You’ll now need to double-click to enable Wallet and then select the appropriate payment method or pass.

Hi Jeff, it's an iphone 15 pro. Even a simple hack or fix would be helpful. I followed instructions from some similar posts, but there is no NFC toggle button. Apple seems to be hard programed to pop up upon sensing nfc reader. For example, my train tickets have an rfid ID image that I open up in Apple Books but I touch a sensor the wallet pops up, asking me to pay for something.
