my cd dvd player keeps ejecting my discs after about 30 seconds

every time i insert a disc it starts to run then kicks it out after about 30 seconds. I am on snow leopard 10.6.8. Is there a firmware update for the cd dvd rom? I don't know what to do, this is my first mac, i got it from family. It did accept some old windows freeware disc, but my 4gb dvd just got kicked out.

The imac is 2006 one, with a 32 bit cpu

Unreliable reading of CD with content that work fine on a neighbour's desktop. Except for this CD/DVD drive, this has been a really reliable computer. I've not upgraded further as I have programs that I purchased that won't run on a higher system, and these programs have now gone to subscription which is not economically feasible for me. I'm not particularly techie. I did run disk utility and everything was fine. Suggestions please?

Help! iMac M3 will not recognize CD-ROM drives Have a week old iMac M3. Will not recognize any CD-ROM player. Seems that apple is abandoning the "old technology" of CD. Support confirms that. Has anyone found a workaround for this? PLEASE, no rehashing of what should be done in settings for prior iMac's. They are all set correctly, yet even support cannot help. This is going to leave tens of thousands of us with no access to our cd's. Not right Apple!!
