My iMessage won’t work since adding the iOS 17 update. How do I fix this problem?

My phone is fixed! I went to the Genius Bar a few days ago and they were stumped and couldn’t help me. I scheduled a call with Apple support and as part of their normal troubleshooting they reset my connection to the iMessage server on their side and had me restart my phone. It instantly started working. If you’re having problems, I suggest you schedule a phone call with Apple support. They have more robust troubleshooting systems an additional access than the in-store folks do.

Can you explain what you mean by "won't work"? Are you having trouble launching the app? Trouble sending or receiving?

Thanks for the reply. I have done that and it didn’t work unfortunately. Maybe I’ll try again.
No, the next thing I'd do is restore the phone to factory settings, again, using a computer. Then test it to see if the problem still exists.
This has to be a problem with iOS 17.1. I have been on the phone and in person at apple for two days hours per day even got a new SIM card from AT&T and no one has been able to fix this issue. Just for the heck of it. I updated my iPad 11.9 and since I updated it I’m having the same issue. Meanwhile I have an iPad 12.9 that I did not update and that works perfectly fine so it Has to be an issue with 17.1 because I have reset my phone to factory settings Not used a back up started from scratch and I’m still having the issue. I’ve been working on this for two days, so Apple has to come up with some kind of patch to fix this. Tell your friends as I did not to update to 17.1.

it’s strange that I did not have this issue until I installed the iOS 17.1 Update.
Apple should address this issue with a future update of iOS 17.1.1, which did not.
If it were a bug in iOS 17.1, there would be complaints all over the forums. There aren't.
I suggest that you restore your phone to factory settings and test it.
Best to set appointment with Tech Dept at your closest Apple Store for both of your devices. I was 2000 miles from Home when “it hit the fan”, in my iPhone. Went to Apple Store & set an appointment.
In about 30 minutes I was leaving the Phoenix Apple Store❗️My XR has been working like brand new again ever since!
Did you make sure the problem isn’t on the other end with the person you’re sending messages. Sometimes is even on Apple end you can check system status.
Did you check your wi-fi / data connection?
What do you mean by not activated yet?
If you can’t turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime on your iPhone – Apple Support (UK)
I might have fixed mine by turning off imessage for 24 hours and then turning back on, as soon as i did that one person replied saying theyd got my message but the other 2 havent so who knows, just updating the thread with what i know so far
First part of your last post is correct! Go to Apple Store & let a Tech check it out. They helped me clean out some old unnecessary junk & that cleared the malfunctioning!!! My wife was right again! After 53 years, I should know better, LOL 😂 ❣️
Save yourself time, & go see a Tech at Apple’s store near you. Mine said I didn’t need vpn due to Apple’s end to end encryption of iMessages.
It was part of my troubles, along with something left behind after changing Phone Carriers!
I went from Xfinity to PureTalk!
This was the fix for my husband! I'm so glad I saw your post because I'm the one who had to tell customer service to check whether iMessages had been disabled for reported spam. Earlier today he received a spam FaceTime audio group call that included his phone number along with 20 others. Someone in that group must have reported his number as spam. What a nightmare.
Best cure is a trip to the Apple Store Tech! Save time and frustration.
“Git er Dun”!
If i turn off imessage then i appear to be able the send sms, have also turned off wifi calling just in case that was affecting the service, if i turn on imessages again they say delivered but never are, i have dual eco sim. so since upgrading to 17.1 I can sms between numbers ok using sms if imessage is turned off but if its on, it appears to send and says delivered but they never arrive or are “read”
This is truly an iOS 17.1 software problem. We (Wife & myself) have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Both with Apple Watches paired to each phone. Updating each phone to iOS 17.1 and each Watch to iOS 10.1, has resulted in the same identical problem. “Can Receiver Text on Watch, but can not Reply on Watch and can’t Send Created Texts”. Prior to the update, I was able to Receive Text and Reply on both Watches. Plus, I was able to Create and Sent Texts on both Watches.
I have done all of the suggested fixes in iMessage on both phone and watch, with no fix in either the iPhone 12 or iPhone 13.
definitely, it’s the software.
I have a brand new iPad. I had to first connect it to a MacBook to update the iOS to 17. Then I could restore from back up. IMessage would send and receive some messages (known contacts with iPhones, but not 100%). One time only messages do not make it to the device. I reset to a fully blank iPad, it worked one time, but I decided to retry the backup. It failed, and every time since (blank or from backup) has failed to get any One Time Only messages.
This is going to ruin Christmas. I bought two iPads so I could set my father up with the easy to use Apple devices (moving him from Android to iPhone too). It’s not going to go well.
Apple needs to fix this. And yes, I have done every single variation of turning things off, restarting, deleting, etc.
