IOS 17.1 Apple Music stops after a couple of songs on 6th Gen iPad

After upgrade to iOS 17.1, Apple Music freezes and stops. I’ve tried streaming and downloading, different Wi-Fi and I’ve just restored to factory with basic setup, no transfer, straight into music and it does the same. iPad 6th generation. Everything else works, it’s just music. Subscriber to Apple Music. Anyone else seeing this or have suggestions please?

Same for me on my 6th Gen iPad, which has lots of storage and has never had a problem before this. It all screams planned obsolescence to me which I loathe. I also don’t have the money for a new iPad so essentially I’d be abandoning years worth of purchased digital music. I was on with support yesterday and all I got for advice was a forced restart and then an admitting that it’s a known issue. I asked for a refund for a service I can’t use because of an internal error but was told no. I’ll keep an eye on this thread. The more people push back, maybe the sooner we will get a resolution. You would think they would be scrambling to restore their flagship app for their loyal customer base!

I don’t think this is a deliberate attempt by Apple to sabotage customers who own 6th gen iPads and force them to get a newer product. The 6th gen was only released in 2018 after all. I think this is a case of a balls up of an update due to lack of thorough testing by Apple’s tech teams. I do agree that everyone in the multiple discussion threads on this topic should definitely log a ticket/ call and apply pressure for a speedy fix. I hope I’m not not being too naive but I’m still hoping 17.2 will fix everything.

Thank you all for posting here. This is my first time on the forum and I haven't figured out exactly how it works and differs from other places that I post. I had no idea posts get removed. I don't know why. Also, I appreciate the correction of when the problem started (sorry, I can't remember who provided that input). I only became aware of the problem after I received a notification that my iPad had updated to 17.1.1, which was about 15 days ago. Once again, I encourage everyone to continue calling and complaining to customer support. I've also started to take this issue outside the Apple community. It needs attention elsewhere. I encourage everyone to do the same. There are all sorts of groups and organizations -- private and government -- that tackle consumer problems. I'm really fed up with no longer having a working iPad.

Same thing is happening on my 7th generation iPad with V 17.1.2!! I spent 2 hours on the phone with the Apple tech yesterday. She said she has never heard of this problem. Now I’m guessing they probably have. My iPad will play a couple songs then freeze up. Songs will disappear then reappear. Now my sound doesn’t even work. I don’t subscribe to Apple Music. All my music is downloaded from CDs or purchased from iTunes. I tried deleting and reinstalling iTunes 6 times, and did a factory restore twice. Spent hours troubleshooting. So frustrating! BTW - iTunes still works perfectly on my old ipod touch, which I’m now using. Now I’m just waiting for Apple to make it obsolete and I won’t be able to use it either.

If this helps the engineers working on this. I tried un-sync the library and re-sync. Twice. Once without a reboot, and once with. I tried rebooting my router (even though Apple Music is the only thing not working). I tried disconnecting from WiFi and Bluetooth and turning it back on. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Apple Music. Today I tried turning off Lossless (even thought that would defeat the purpose of having nice DACs). I thought that worked, but the Apple Music app quickly froze. I obviously tried to turn off the iPad and back on, multiple times. I'm willing to try anything, other than refreshing the iPad back to factory. Others have tried, and that doesn't work.

I pay for Apple Music a year at a time, so I can't just cancel it. Please upgrade this issue to be taken care of ASAP.

This doesn't seem to be a data transfer issue, as after re-syncing my library, it all came back quickly. The Apple Music app itself stops playing music and becomes unresponsive (freezes).

I updated to 17.2 on my 6th Gen and it kindof worked, but the sound will stop after a short while even though the app shows that the music is still playing. I can restart the app and it will play again, but it sucks to put a song on repeat only to have it stop playing after a few repetitions. I play music for my dog on repeat to relax him when I’m working from home or leave the house, so it’s not great.

And no Apple, it’s not my speakers. They work just fine.

Hopefully they will keep working on this.

For what it's worth, this is also a problem on my brand-new MacBook pro with an M3 chip and 36 gigs of RAM. I've tried all sorts of changes to the settings in the laptop and to my wifi system. No luck. The laptop streams music I own perfectly but won't stream Apple Music files I don't own. May cancel and move on to some other streaming service if this keeps up.
