I have updated my mac to Sonoma 14, but now get error messages when trying to do payroll for my business using HMRC Basic Paye Tools. Is anyone else having the same problem.

Basic PAYE Tools repeatedly crashed when I tried submitting RTI data having installed HMRC's January 2024 update. I found that submitting individual employee data one piece at a time rather than as a batch overcame the problem. This was on Sonoma 14.1. I didn't have to reinstall Ventura.
Thanks for the advice. I am using HMRC basic PAYE tools with Mac OS Ventura and it was crashing every time I tried to submit an employee payment (after thw Jan 24 update).
I ticked the "explain why this is late" box (leave the reason blank), and the submission went through.
As you say, doesn't make HMRC software look good, does it?
Hi Les,
I run on Sonoma 14.4.0 , Big Sur 11.7.10 (Native) and Mojave 10.14.6 via Parallels. After downloading the latest HMRC BRT Version 23.1.23352 I find it runs fine on all of the above, regrettably I don't run Monterey anywhere.
If it's not even opening then I think it may be the new "Browser" interface that playing up, try having Safari open with a blank page to see if that registers.
Otherwise can you have a Console window open to see if it reports any diagnostics there?
Sorry can't help more at the moment!
Regards,
Shawn
I did find that it was critical which submission button you use, one crashes, the other works! I find clicking on the submission button on the far right hand side seems to work.
I Have had similar issues, Got no help at all from HMRC. I spotted someone had posted they had sent submissions individually. Thankfully this worked for me. hope this helps out.
How to reinstall macOS – Apple Support (UK)
I followed these instructions, mine is an 'Intel' so I followed the bit "if your using any other Mac" I backed up my data first on an external hard drive and via Time Machine and tooka back up of Basic Paye Tools.
Now.... if you have been using Time Machine regularly you might be able to roll back to a previous version using that, unfortunately I didnt do that hence had to do the whole wipe and start again process. I am not very techy either so was a bit nervous... fingers crossed I seem to have done it ok. Such a huge amount of hassle! Good Luck
Not exactly. I followed someone's advice on here and did it through Chrome rather than Safari. I also sent each submission separately rather than "all submissions". I have little confidence that it will work again this month though. It took so much time!
Claire,
yes me too - I used the browser print function instead and did a “print to pdf”.
Format for the payslips looks the same to me.
YMMV
After updating my Basic Tools software again this week (am on latest MacOS) and getting another sequence of crashes and errors in both Safari and Chrome... I've given up on it. Don't think HMRC are really up to the job of running and maintaining this software anymore... even as a web tool.
Have now moved to a free (for up to 3 users) online Payroll service. Managed to switch over in an hour. Job done.
I am having this problem. I had the problem in April after upating the HMRC tools and/ or upgrading to Sonoma 14 which was probably about the same time. I have deleted the payment and ticked the box "I wish to explain why this is late" (I was always told to ignore this box by my accountant!) but it is still crashing or going to the 127.0.0.1 page which tells me that I either have no connection (not true) or that I need to:
"Allow Chrome to access the network in your firewall or antivirus settings.
If it is already listed as a program allowed to access the network, try removing it from the list and adding it again.
If you use a proxy server…
Check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure that the proxy server is working. If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server: Go to Applications > System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies and deselect any proxies that have been selected."
but I can't seem to work out how to do this - I now have one late submission and one outstanding (which I can't do until I've submitted the May one - which I've deleted and redone).
Has anyone else had this problem please?
I am having the same problem on monterey so you will have to roll back further.
I spoke to HMRC on Monday and they are aware of the problem. I was put on hold to see if he could find out what was happening but got cut off and I didn't have the determination to spend another 35 minutes trying to get through to them!
Yes, that’s what is happening to me now. There has been an update and everything looked promising. I went to restore from a back up and it will not recognise it. Luckily, I’ve been using my old Microsoft laptop to run payroll but I would like to get back to using my Mac. Very frustrating.
Glad I’ve ground this - as I’m using HMRC RTI - and opening up on the web browser - rather than on the app type on your desk top- IS THIS CORRECT AS YOU ALSO CANT SEEM TO PRINT LIKE YOU USE TO- have to do file drop down and print that way?
Hi Shawn
I just managed to do the payroll (only 4 employees thank goodness) and I did it on the online version which crashed when I tried to submit all. I then downloaded the windows version which seemed to have managed to save all of the data and I submitted each one separately and that seemed to work. Good luck everyone with end of year payroll.
This is beyond frustrating. I have successfully used PAYE tools for 12 years without incident. Now I get crashes every time I submit. (Apple Mac Pro - Sonoma 14.2). I am a one person company so payroll shouldn't be this difficult. Last month I received a threatening letter from HMRC because submission was late. That's because I couldn't send it. I also have a PC and downloaded Basic Paye Toosl on there but it won't let me submit anything because it says this person has already been paid. Will no doubt keep receiving the letters and fines.
