I want to be able to delete emails from my iphone but keep them on my mac

the default behavior of the most used mail accounts today (IMAP and Exchange) is that the mails are kept on the server and synced to the mail app so they are always in sync, this works against you

Thank you for responding. Everything is fine if I move an email into a folder and then delete the version on my iPhone, the email remains on my mac in the folder.

I don't understand why the system works differently when I delete on my mac, the email stays on my iPhone. So I must be able to change a setting to enable deleting on iPhone and keep on mac.

Or, maybe not! This happens with my mail accounts - iCloud and tiscali. At least I am aware of it and although I like to keep my phone lean and mean (!) I'll just have to put up with it.
