iOS 17.1.1 - Issues with iPhone touch screen

This morning I updated my iPhone 15 pro (3 week old phone) to iOS 17.1.1. Prior to the update everything worked fine. After the update the touch screen does not respond. The screen works and the buttons work, but the touch feature is completely unresponsive. I have restarted the phone using the up vol, down vol and hold the power button several times with no success on restoring touch.

I can still wirelessly charge my phone, but wired charging does not work either. (this is also a new issue post 17.1.1 update)

Anyone else seeing these issues? Any suggestions before I go back to ATT?

IF this happens, DON'T go to the Apple Store. All you have to do is this:

  1. tap the volume up once
  2. tap the volume down once
  3. hold the power button until you see the apple logo (it will take about 40 seconds so be patient)

Then, VOILA! Restored!

This is pathetic. Such an expensive and new phone having so many issues. What is going on with iPhone quality - too many software and hardware glitches. I tried the pressing volume up/down button and then side button until the apple logo appears thing - phone rebooted, but screen is still stuck. My phone is barely 2 weeks old!

Good news. I may have a solve. My 15 Pro Max locked up the touch screen as soon as I went to iOS 17.1.1 tonight. My symptoms were the same as described in these threads with the Mac reporting DFU mode when plugged in. No number of forced reboots brought back touch input.

Try this: Download Apple Configurator from the Mac App restore and 'revive' the device. I got mine back with all data intact. No restore required. Good luck!

FIXED!!!! Thank you to those that recommended Apple Configurator!! I downloaded it from App Store, connected my phone and followed Step 3 here... Revive or restore a Mac with Apple silicon using Apple Configurator – Apple Support (UK) (appreciate it's a Mac post but step 3 applies to iphones too)

No factory reset or loss of data or the pain of setting up banking apps and apple pay etc.... :)

I wish Apple would let us know when we have these type of issues and release another update. Most of us have upgraded to the newest iOS and it is not fun when you had to restart your phone through a factory reset Apple needs to figure out these updates before releasing them to us, as I have also had to now factor restart and lose a lot of data that was not backed up to my iCloud as most of us know we had to re-enter our information to get her eye watches our iPads, and our other devices reconnected to the same account, and it takes almost a whole day to reset up Apple, please fix this update

# Fixed

I also updated my iPhone 15 Pro Max from iOS 17.1.1 to iOS 17.1.2 today. After that, the touchscreen on my iPhone was unfortunately unusable and I was trapped in the lock screen. Repeated force restarts did not solve the problem. After Apple Support was unable to help me, I looked for a solution myself and luckily came across this thread.

Here is the solution that worked for me:

I was also reluctant to reset my iPhone to factory settings and restore from an iCloud backup, so I also chose the Apple Configurator option.

I installed the Apple Configurator on my Mac Book Pro (M1) with Mac OS 14.0 and tried to revive the iPhone using the process described in this link under step 3. Unfortunately, like some other users, I received the following error on my first attempt: "iOS cannot be restored on this iPhone - Can't restore Port DFU device with NULL prepared boot options"

I then updated my Mac Book Pro to the latest Mac OS 14.1.2 and repeated the procedure. Now the revival of the iPhone worked and the reinstallation of iOS 17.1.2 fixed the bug.

My iPhone is now working again and all data has been retained on my iPhone and luckily I didn't have to reinstall all banking and authenticator apps as well as Apple Pay.

I hope the solution works for you too. Good luck :)

Hi:

I'm dealing with this same issue -- overnight update leads to a bricked phone in the morning. I've tried the trick using the buttons, but after a dozen attempts, there's no change. Sorry to all of you who are experiencing this, it's a real pain!

As to Apple Configurator, I'd need to upgrade to the latest OS and I don't want to do that to my computer because a number of third party applications do not work with it.

Fortunately, my iCloud backup is two days old, so I'm thinking the path is to factory restore the phone and then load from that iCloud backup. Imperfect, but close enough. Does this seem like the right approach?

Further, I can't seem to access my phone through the finder window to do a factory restore. Is my only option to erase through Find My and restore from iCloud backup?

Hi Jabir227, just wanted to let you know that I had the same issue and took my iphone 15 pro to my local apple store. Unfortunately, they said that the only way to fix the issue if restarting your phone (by quickly pressing the volume up, then volume down, then holding down the off button) does not fix the issue is to restore your iphone to factory settings. If your iphone was backed up on icloud then you can transfer your data back onto your iphone once it is wiped. For me, I didn't back up my phone on icloud so I lost all my data. Its very frustrating but this is the only solution they could offer. All the best.

I have a iPhone 13 Pro Max. I play a lot of games on my phone… I have slot games I love to play, however, since my phone updated to the 17.1.1 I’m having issues with some of the slot games being so small I can’t see them, to change bet is next to impossible, because it’s like screen is frozen… and some games are so large that the changing bet setting and spin buttons are now off screen. I’ve done all I know to do and nothing has changed. I’m not a happy camper right now! Can some help me please?

This is by far the WORST UPDATE EVER!

I can't get to the phone keypad for responses to automated questions since the update. Hard to even text and go back to correct a sentence. Very easy to accidentally hit FaceTime while on a call with the new home screen button placement at the bottom. Underlining on text annoying - no reason for it as words are not misspelled. What does that blue line even mean?

APPLE PLEASE DO SOMETHING SOON TO CORRECT THESE IMPORTANT ISSUES.

I also updated my IPhone 14 pro to the latest iOS and most of the time it works fine but yeah the screen is sometimes unresponsive (scrolls up when i want to scroll down, opens apps that i didn't press, lagging on my scrolling...) Wired charging works for me but unlocking my phone sometimes is a hustle.

For now it works normal but please i need answers to fix the issue before i take it somewhere to get it fixed, does updating it to the next update restores the responsiveness of the screen?

Same problem. When I plugged the phone into iTunes it immediately said it was in DFU mode. Downloaded and updated to the factory settings, then restored from the backup I created when getting the new phone and other than time everything was OK. What did surprise me is that it says I’m now at 17.1.1 but the restore was from 17.1 so I’m not sure if it’s accurate or now but it’s working!

I ran into the same issue mentioned on the post and in the comments. Went to the apple store and they told me that the only thing they could do was a factory restore. I didn't have my phone backed up (couple years at least) and I really didn't want to lose any data. I also reached out to Data Recovery companies that were quoting me $700+. I tried the Apple Configurator but wasn't able to download it.

I used Tenorshare to reinstall the latest update and that worked! Wanted to share in case it helps anyone else on this thread!!

One thing to note, while my phone was unresponsive to the touch screen, I continued to get messages/notifications on my watch.
