Wondering if you have plenty of memory / storage space in which your Mac can operate freely:
(Is a good idea to keep at least 50Gb free, for the tasks you want to perform.)

If space is not a problem:
Check whether you have installed any third-party (non-Apple) apps like virus, checkers, cleaners, ad-blockers and the like, also VPN and even browsers have been the cause of difficulties. If so, try turning off such apps (or uninstall using the uninstaller from the developer) and see if that makes a difference.
