iOS 17.1.1 - Can't set up FaceID - Move iPhone Higher/Lower

I recently updated to iOS 17.1.1 and noticed FaceID was working unreliably. This is on a iPhone 13 Pro Max.

I reset FaceID, but now when I try to set it up, the image is blurry and I get the Move iPhone Higher/Lower message over and over again.

Then, I reset all setting in attempt to fix this, and it still doesn't work. There's nothing covering the dot projector, it's clean and smudge free, I haven't dropped my phone or anything. How do I resolve this?

Having the same problem but I had dropped my phone. I decided to try tapping the top on my desk a few times and tried the setup. it worked!!!

I am having the same issue on my 13 Pro since upgrading to 17.1. It is not a hardware issue — I’m able to take perfectly focused selfies with the forward-facing camera. It is strictly an issue with FaceID. Resetting all settings was ineffective. Upgrading to 17.1.1 did not resolve the problem.
