Can’t iMessage internationally

I used to be abke to imessage contacts abroad. They appeared as blue messages. But when i tried recently, the message appeared green and then i got a red exclamation mark and a not delivered message. I have a stable, working internet connection. I don’t understand what changed.

iMessage requires both the sender and receiver to have iMessage activated and have an active data connection. It doesn’t care where in the world either party is located.

If it’s turning green, that means it’s attempting to send as SMS/MMS because either you or they don’t have a data connection or have deactivated iMessage. If your carrier doesn’t allow international texting, that would explain why it’s failing. It’s also possible the contact information you have for the recipient (email address and/or phone number) is no longer valid.
